Goes on sale in Europe in spring of 2015, could come to North America
Wagon lovers, rejoice! Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its next hot production compact and it’s in the form of a wagon — or Variant in German automaker speak.
The new Volkswagen Golf R Variant will be powered by the same 2.0-litre TSI as the Golf R producing 296 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed DSG dual clutch transmission will be standard fare along with 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
With power and traction comes a 5.1 second sprint to 100 km/h and an electronically-limited top speed of 249 km/h. The Golf R Variant also sits 0.8 inches lower than a standard Golf.
While the release does state the new model will go on sale in Europe in the spring of next year, it doesn’t rule out the possibility of the hot wagon coming to North America. Considering Volkswagen is bringing it to Los Angeles to make its world debut, the chances of a Golf R Wagon on our shores is at least hinted.
Volkswagen will also bring the GTI Roadster Concept and Golf R 400 to the show.
We will have live coverage from the Los Angeles Auto Show starting tomorrow.
