“Keep right except to pass” law will see changes and increased enforcement
After a video called “Speed Kills…Your Pocketbook” by British Columbia resident Chris Thompson went viral last year, the provincial government has been investigating what to do about speed limits.
After ten months, the Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review has come to a conclusion: raise speed limits on certain sections of British Columbia’s highways and increase enforcement of updated “keep right except to pass” laws to foster “an attitude of cooperation on the roads” says Thompson.
A vast majority (81 percent) of residents in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland supported increasing speed limits, according to the province, but residents in Metro Vancouver did not widely support increases and there will be no changes to speed limits in that region.
The new highest speed limit in the province will be 120 km/h.
The government also stated it will introduce changes to the Motor Vehicle Act aimed at slow vehicles in left-hand lanes. New signage and pavement markings will also be introduced, including a sign instructing drivers to pull over if they have five or more vehicles following them.
Other announcements included updates to winter tire requirements and wildlife collision prevention.
