Toyota’s value-focused Scion brand today announced it’s adding yet another limited edition style-over-substance package to the FR-S sportster, dubbed Release Series 2.0.

Scion will build 1,000 examples of the car for North America, with 150 of those destined for Canada. Buyers who opt to spend $32,800 (a $5,300 bump over the car’s base price) will get black Alcantara-and-leather heated seats with “camel” accents, black-and-camel steering wheel, and black leather-trimmed shifter and parking brake handle. On the functional side comes intelligent keyless entry with push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and HID headlights with LED daytime runners.

Lunar Storm paint (think the colour of concrete and you’ll have the right idea), unique-to-this-trim black wheels, and an aero kit set the exterior apart from the rest of the FR-S range.

These are all nice additions–we admit we like the two-tone seats and how the black wheels and paint colour look together–but the idea of a luxurious FR-S run counter to Scion’s positioning it as an “authentic” sports car, never mind that $5,300 seems like a lot of coin for what’s on offer here. Both Scion and Subaru (the two brands co-developed this car, and Subaru sells it as the BRZ) seem reluctant to add any performance to this platform, preferring to pile on features in limited edition runs like this one.

The $32,800 price is for the manual transmission; a six-speed automatic is a $1,180 option.
