New flat-plane 5.2-litre V8 will make over 500 hp

There’s a lot of history in Ford’s upper-level Mustangs. But, instead of bringing out another GT500, the Blue Oval has gone a little further back in history and released details on their track-capable GT350 that ditches supercharging for naturally aspirated power.

Seen in these render images from Ford, the new Shelby GT350 doesn’t just put new paint on the Mustang shell. The traditional open grille is present. Also, a new aluminum hood has been “lowered and sloped” says a release from Ford. Front and rear aero elements have been added to give the Mustang a bit more grip at the track and improve cooling airflow. Even the front fenders needed to be pulled out to wrap around the wider track of the new car.

It’s all powered by a 5.2-litre V8 engine with a flat-plane crankshaft. Ford says the new engine produces “more than 500 horsepower” and over 400 lb-ft of torque.
