New ‘skillet’ production line to improve quality, safety

Construction has commenced on FCA’s improved Windsor Assembly facility ahead of the debut of new minivans from Chrysler.

The construction will completely re-engineer the assembly line of the facility, introducing what FCA calls a ‘skillet’ line, which raises or lowers the vehicle on the assembly line to the optimal height for workers. The line will live in a 20 foot high enclosure.

Exterior construction began on Boxing Day with a 600-ton crane installing 200 pieces of structural steel. Additional projects will be completed during 14 weeks of downtime beginning in February, states a release from FCA.

The facility was opened in 1928 and currently builds the Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, Ram Cargo Van, and Lancia Grand Voyager.
