Ford product chief drops number during Fox Sports interview
If you’re like us, when Ford announced the new 3.5L EcoBoost V6 powered Raptor would produce more horsepower and torque than the outgoing 6.2L V8, you wondered how much more?
Well, if Ford’s product chief, Raj Nair, is to be believed (and why wouldn’t he be?) the new off-road basher will make 39 more horsepower (from 411 to 450) by way of the new boosted V6. Will it be called EcoBeast? That’s still up in the air (like most Raptors).
We should expect similar gains on the torque side of the equation. The outgoing V8 produces 434 lb-ft of torque and, as Automobile points out, there’s already EcoBoost V6s in Ford’s lineup making 420 lb-ft of torque.
The new Raptor, which goes on sale in late 2016 as a 2017 model, will cut weight to the tune of 500 lbs thanks to all-aluminum body construction. Add to that a new 10-speed automatic transmission (with likely closer ratios than the outgoing 6-speed slusher), we expect — and eagerly await — a much lighter, much faster desert racing truck for the street.
