Due to a high demand from their customers, Ford have just announced a conversion kit for 2016 F-150 5.0L V8 models. While there’s still no word on whether or not a hybrid option will be coming down the pipeline, there’s clearly a demand for for an alternative to conventional gasoline-guzzling 5.0s.

The previous generation 2014 F-150 equipped with the 3.7L V6 was available with the CNG/propane conversion kits and Ford exceeded sales expectations by more than 40 percent. For the one year it was offered, they sold more than 2,000 units. It’s pretty safe to assume Ford was waiting to find out if the demand for the alternative fueling method would remain in high demand for the new models before committing to the conversion kits.

The demand is still there and higher than ever, according to Ford. Due to unstable gasoline costs, more and more fleet service vehicles are being converted to CNG/propane setups. The engine prep will cost buyers US$315. The conversion includes upgraded intake and exhaust valves and valve seats. The buyer will then have to go to a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier to supply fuel tanks, fuel lines and unique fuel injectors. Total costs will run approximately US$7,500 to US$9,500 depending on fuel tank capacity.

If you’re concerned about payload and towing capacity, Ford says that 2016 F-150 trucks running on CNG/propane will be able to tow the same amount as their gas counterparts while payload capability also remains unchanged – minus the weight of the installed CNG or propane system, of course.

On top of saving you money at the pumps, the CNG/propane conversion results in cleaner emissions, with up to a 20% tailpipe CO2 emissions reduction compared to a standard 5.0L F-150.
