A coworker in my dept is here on temporary assignment from Michigan and brought down his Focus RS. Let's see how it fares in the mountains under load here  >:D

I actually saw an RS spewing white smoke the other day as it pulled into a local Ford dealer.  And here I was wondering what that was all about.

What a bummer -- especially when you think of all the clamoring and campaigning North American RS fans did to bring the car over here.

Meanwhile, I imagine Focus ST fanbois are spinning their front tires with schadenfreude :P

Well that sucks.

But when you push 350hp through 2.3L, I'm not really surprised that it happens.

I wonder if any engineers warned the bean counters about the design.

Hopefully it's an easy fix with just a better quality head gasket?  Doubt it, but hopefully...

Easiest fix would have been if Ford would have made a proper closed deck block.....everyone with half a brain can tell you that the open decks are known for moving around under high boost situations. There is no real "easy" fix here without someone designing some sort of insert.

Yep.  This makes the Type R look a damn sight better, now.

Here is a good explanation of open deck vs semi-closed vs closed deck.

Meh.  I have low expectations.

Interesting article on open vs closed decks.  Seems so simple, but yes, quite a difference.  Now it makes me wonder - did Ford go open deck because of price, or because of cooling?

Price, way cheaper to machine an open deck block. Sure, they will tell you some BS about "cooling" and "saving weight for gas mileage", but its a pathetic attempt at cost cutting.

STI doesn't have HG issues.  Most common issue is the piston ringlands.  Even then, nobody really knows the actual failure rate.
