- fresh review from AoA.

I'd love me a Nurburgring Green 3.3T  :drive:

Wokeism is nothing more than the recognition and opposition of bigotry in all its forms.  Bigots are predictably triggered.

yea, if you're going to spend $50k-ish on a car in this class, it seems pretty tough to beat...no, it's not perfect, but does so many things well, i'm not sure you can justify choosing it's competitors unless you really want the badge or perhaps they offer better lease rates...considering most of the buyers in that segment seem to lease their vehicles, that may be the deciding factor.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

A comparably equipped S4 (Technik trim, driver assistance package, HUD, sport diff, and sport suspension with damping control) is about $11k more than a G70 3.3T Sport. The Sportback is another $5k on top of that.

Pretty bold. While it's a great car and a great value it's still objectively not the best car in it's class. Whether you want to pony the additional $10K or not for the S5 sportback is up to the purchaser.

I think something else to be concerned about would be depreciation - and as you said lease rates are an issue IIRC.
depreciation would be something to consider if you are leasing (affects rates) or flip your cars every few years (see upside down thread)...if you're planning on buying the car and keeping it long term, it's less of an issue...things like having the features you want (so you can be happy for a longer period of time) as well as having a vehicle be reasonably reliable and of decent quality to keep the ownership experience positive...i think the G70 will hold its own in those areas.

regarding the car itself, most reviews so far have been quite positive, so saying it isn't best in class is certainly objective, since the "benchmark" has traditionally been the 3 series BMW, and most have said this is a better car than that...factor in the warranty, pricing, performance and possibly long term reliability, you'd have to want a BMW to choose it instead...you wouldn't fault someone for choosing the BMW, Audi or MB, but likewise, you couldn't fault someone for choosing the G70 as well...i think, as do many others, that it is an excellent car on its own merits...it also recently won Motor Trend's Car of the Year (for what that's worth).

Finally saw one on the road this week!  It was black with the non-sport, but higher trim wheels (the best wheels on this vehicle imo).  Very classy and aggressive looking car.  The DRLs really stand out.  Good job, Genesis!

I've seen a bunch of them in Oakville, now.  Or else I'm seeing the same 2-3 cars over and over again - hard to say.  :P  It's certainly a sharp looking ride in the metal, and definitely brings an element of exclusivity that the C-Class (I have no idea how Oakville C-Class drivers find their cars in parking lots) does not.  Still don't see many Stingers for some reason.

Pretty much exactly what I though about the 2.0 and the manual. It doesn't sound good, it's not quick or exciting and the manual is uninspiring.

I sat in one at the Genesis dealership the other day. I spotted it while driving to the Kia dealership to pick up the Mini.

I didn’t have enough time to take it for a spin, but hoo boy have Hyundai interiors come a long way!

I then proceeded to the Kia dealership and there was its platform mate. A Kia Stinger. It’s a sign!

G70 just took top honors in Detroit.  ;D

https://www.clickondetroit.com/auto-show/genesis-g70-wins-2019-north-american-car-of-the-year-award-at-detroit-auto-show
that's 2 CotY awards in 2 weeks.   :)

I will look forward to a head-to-head with '19 BMW 3-series. The new 3 is a home run in my books. I personally would pick it over the G70 in the 2.0T trim 100 times out of 100 regardless of existing price difference. Competition doesn't stay still. The tucked on iPad on the G70 is the worst implemented ever, and it even looks like it's not a wide-screen and breaks up the overall design. Good car by all accounts but I'd go for the new 3.

Interesting also is how NONE of the reviews of the new 3 I've seen ever mention the G70 as a competitor at all. Not even in passing.
It's a major uphill battle for Hyundai, and I wish them success. I've seen exactly 1 G70 in Ottawa so far, and about 5 Stingers in total.

Genesis has the potential to compete directly with the "big boys" but so far my projection is it's going to stop at the level of Infinity - good, competent, but a rung lower that FGC 3 and Lexus.

the biggest challenge for Genesis isn't their product...it's the fact many people who buy the BMW, Audi and Merc products lease them and their lease rates are usually quite low as well as the badge snobbery that is quite strong in many of those circles.

I am quite honestly getting tired of people using this "snobbery" word. Not directed personally at you but let's think about it.
What does the word "luxury" mean? One of the integral parts of luxury is pedigree, heritage. Your Kia Rio in all likelihood has more standard features than a base "luxury" brand car. That's not what makes a luxury car "luxury".
We've been through this a number of times on this forum.
The intangible qualities of a car are just as real as the list of features. It's all about perception, and perception is just as real as everything else.
Lexus had stayed true to its mission for a number of years before the "perception" materialized for them and now they reap the benefits.
Ignoring it is a perfect recipe for failure.
Staying the course, churning out a great product after a good product consistently year after year MAY result in success. But not now yet, for Genesis.

Look at Caddy. They had a great product in the ATS - award after award. It was acclaimed as the 3-series crusher. And where is it now? Ultimate and total oblivion. Total dud regardless of how good it was on the 'ring. The ATS name is GONE. And Caddy had (hopefully, still hasn't lost completely) the pedigree to draw upon.

You have to have ALL ducks in a row to strike gold. I hear Hyundai is committed to the Genesis brand but so far, I see them as Acura/Infinity alternatives, and not higher. Why? A few obvious missteps - lack of dealer network (availability), failure to completely separate the brand from its "lower" sister Hyundai, and investing from the get-go into the dwindling sedan market (where is the bloody Genesis CUV?). These are all setbacks that will cost them in the end.

Let's get back to this in a few years and see where the Genesis brand lands.

Finally got to check out a G70. Beautiful car, but it’s small.

The red G70 to the left is stunning.
