2018 Golf R
« on: July 11, 2017, 09:47:40 am »
Last week I put down a token refundable deposit on a 2018 Golf R. (Sales rep said dont expect it till November  :o). (Pricing isnt even yet available)

(Kept the MT, kept the base wheels but did order the optional "Driver's Assistance Package"; colour is the subdued "Indium Grey").

(Most of the monies to pay for this purchase will come from the "sell back" to VW of our 2015 TDI Golf Sportwagen).

Nice! You'll be joining a few other R owners here.

Yup. After getting feedback from some of them I went ahead with the 'purchase'.

Thanks for your best wishes but given that it isnt expected until November it does seem too soon to get excited ;).

Just a really brief update:

We have had this GOLF R (MT) for a little over 2 years now and have accumulated just under 50k km. I continue to like this car (all untuned). My wife wishes we had got the DSG transmission as she refuses to drive a *6* speed (although the car she drives is a manual transmission 5 speed).

In the 2+ years we have had it it has been basically trouble free. I do like a hatchback but having said that I do wish it was it a tad larger. This is my first car with a profile being so low to the ground...it does make me nervous.

I do enjoy driving this car.

Thanks for the update.

So what you're saying is that you (like everyone) wish they made an R wagon.

i just had an 18 stick R traded in yesterday... fun little thing. he managed to get it here and I managed to miss the clutch slippage until today... damn it.

my wife is funny with the 6 speeds... she wouldn't use 6th in my old wrangler because she thought she was going to go in reverse by accident... so she now still won't use 6th in my jeep, even though reverse is on the opposite side.

I won't use 6th in IQs TT because the drone of the exhaust irritates me...

And a toasted clutch on a 2018 car??

1) VW quality is sh*t
2) The car has been beat on.

Pick your poison!!    :rofl2:
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

53000kms... so not a baby. it'll still work, but I won't sell it like it is. I think it's a little of column a and a little of column b... i'll send it to VW to see if I get lucky and anything is covered under warranty... maybe the flywheel has an issue or something.

VW might find chip tuning, the most likely cause of a slipping clutch (speaking from experience many years ago).

The clutch in the R does seem to be weak from some of what I've read. My GTI's clutch was fine when I turned it in with 80k on it.

What would you put that R on the lot for? What color is it?

Most important question — what would the owner of a R be looking to buy? ;-)

My wife wishes we had got the DSG transmission as she refuses to drive a *6* speed (although the car she drives is a manual transmission 5 speed).

This makes no sense.  :rofl2:

She doesnt like the location of reverse in this European 6 speed.

But it has a reverse lockout though....how on earth could she get it into reverse?
