It is AWD, that's all I'll say for now  :)

Will try and post our other test drives in the meantime

Just noticed this thread was started on July 10, 2017. Glad to see you didn't rush into this purchase.

Looking forward to the Show 'n Shine!

:D  Ya'll know we were looking at VW Sportwagen's, right?

One of vehicles we did try was the Honda Passport, a heavily discounted new base 'Sport' for 38,000, and a couple of lightly used top trim 'Touring' starting at 42,000.

My wife really liked the design of the Passport, it struck her as a similar tall boxy design to her old CRV, just bigger. I thought it looked like the package her car came in.

The drive was very nice, especially with the Touring, which seemed worth the extra money

My notes
-quiet, lots of power (exhilarating), nicer inside than expected inside, tons of space, useful armrests, tight turning circle, almost seemed to turn in it’s own length
-great visibility, tall windows, big mirrors, plus you sit high
-wide though, no front or overhead camera, no parking sensors for the front center (although the corner ones seem to work to some extent for straight ahead
-pushbutton shifter is odd, but seemed like something that could be gotten used to
-the Touring felt noticeably more premium with perforated cooled leather and what seemed like a lot of extra features. Also quieter, probably due to the acoustic glass. The nav map was a useful feature, and the touchscreen was easy to use

In the end though, taking it to a grocery store parking lot and trying some close in parking, we decided it was just too big for her to park around the city

Thanks to Gurgie for tips! We ended up test driving these twice as my wife really liked them

With this thread being 10 pages now I can't remember if you tried a Hyundai Tucson or not. If you did, what were your thoughts on it?
We drove one for a week in the Canary island last Xmas and I found it to be a nice vehicle. It was  with a standard transmission though which was to my liking.

No Tucson, we did rent a 2019 Santa Fe last year though (as well as a Tiguan and an RVR)

My wife is not a fan of Korean vehicles (at least not yet), and the Santa Fe did not impress her enough to keep trying the range. Plus one of our friends had a terrible experience shopping at Hyundai here so that didn't help

The Santa Fe did sell me on the next vehicle having automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise if possible.

Just got back from three weeks driving through BC to Washington/Oregon and back. Rented as we are waiting to see what the provincial budget does.

The only thing they had was a Mitsubishi RVR, but my wife was not comfortable with that on a long highway trip so we got swapped to a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan at Canmore. This served us well until I spotted a nasty sidewall bulge in one tire at the Oregon coast:

Luckily the rental agency had a 2019 Santa Fe, so we drove home from Oregon in it.

It was a nice long test drive in two roughly similar late model vehicles

I liked the Hyundai better (standard radar cruise and lane guidance took a lot of the work out of a busy highway, standard heated wheel)

The wife preferred the VW (more grunt to the engine in the mountains, and better handling)

2019 Volkwagen Tiguan, 40,000 km
Pros
-torquey engine
-good handling
-great stereo
-good visibility

Cons
-cheap interior
-buzzing in dash
-less standard equipment (no radar cruise, auto braking, lane tracing, heated wheel)
-check engine light (stop start system stumble, fixed it with a bluetooth code reader I was carrying)
-steering wheel tilt was broken
-weird German things (ie, impossible to shut off the rear passenger interior lights with their switches, had to shut them off with a master switch up front)
-weak headlights
-useless armrests

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, 30,000 km
Pros
-quality interior
-solid, ‘heavy’ feel
-driver attention monitoring handy
-radar cruise useful
-lane assist on non mountain roads
-auto braking
-driver monitoring
-full heated steering wheel
-two front usb ports
-standard fogs
-good headlights

Cons
-weak engine
-seats need a lumbar support of some kind
-lane assist makes the car handle poorly on mountain roads, but easy to disable
-marginal armrests

Both
Pro
-Carplay

Con
-stop start

It was interesting how different this new Tiguan is from the previous version which my daughter in law has. Easily a size bigger, with a huge back seat, but a lot of money taken out of the interior. I thought it was sort of like a jacked up and chopped Dodge Caravan. Handled well, surprisingly good sound system, but the the auto stop/start was a constant annoyance. Seats seemed hard initially but turned out to be fairly comfortable. The buzzing from the dash came and went, drove me nuts as I could not seem to trace it

The Hyundai on the other hand had a nicer interior and better equipment levels, but was let down somewhat by an underpowered engine (I understand the optional turbo engine is quite a bit better) and uncomfortable seats (at least on long rides). I became a big fan of the radar cruise and the driver attention monitor. The lane tracing was useful in prairie conditions but fought the steering too much in the mountains, possibly a setting issue. It also had the stop start, but the engine seemed to handle it with less stumbles. With both you could disable the stop start with a button, but not permanently. I think hybrids likely handle auto stop/start better.

Definitely gave us some things to look for in the next vehicle, but doubt either of these would make the cut

It's dependent on the dealer getting a few things done, so we'll see

After all this time I'll believe it when I see it in the driveway!

WalMart is selling VWs?  Not surprised by that.

Black VW sportwagens are everywhere! You can see one in the background behind what we have our deposit down on:

A 2017 RX350 Executive, 42,000km

Needed a bit of tinkering, including sorting out some error messages, changing the windshield, buffing out some scratches and changing over from winter tires.

Drove like a dream though, has full 3M, clean accident record, 360 cameras, radar cruise, auto emergency braking, spotless interior, etc. If it checks out when we go back to the dealership that's what we'll end up with

Nice and pre-congrats!  I got a ride in my Uncle's RX and thought it was a great place to be while putting in the miles. Hope it all works out and enjoy.

Congrats!  Lexus for the win!

If I had to replace my car tomorrow, I'd most likely get a UX250h.

Assimilation was inevitable, I guess  :)

It would have been a Sportwagen if they would have had the Comfortline AWD in stock like the VW salesman thought, but no!

The main issue with the RX is an error message that was showing 'AWD Malfunction, 2WD engaged' amongst other things disabled

Lexus cleared the codes, recalibrated the sonar, and took it for a run where all was good. Hopefully it stays that way.

Some research online seems to show that the 'AWD Malfunction' message is an all purpose message that can mean just a low battery or a gas cap not tightened up, which is what I am hoping. It's on comprehensive warranty for another year in any case, but we will see what the car does when we go to see it again.
