Heh, I would have probably got one already, but the only two available did not please the wife (high mileage, wrong color, etc). Tons of regular RX around here, not many hybrids. The premium for them new is quite a lot.

I don't think you could go wrong with either of them
The Rav 4 seats are too narrow for me, that is why it is of the list
Have you look at Lexus NX 200 ?

Not closely, the wife does not like the cowcatcher front, the rear visibility looks terrible, and they are still pretty expensive, not a lot of discount yet on used ones as they are so new. Plus the base version is missing a lot of features.

How's the Lexus servicing costs been for you?

Only had it month, so no service yet

You can always take it to Toyota dealer for servicing since it shares a lot parts with the last generation of HL
The dealer Is About 75 km away, so I will go with the Toyota dealer or Indy mechanic the

We're one of the few families on our street without an RX, and all report low costs to maintain - very Toyota like.  One of our neighbour's second car is a Matrix and they take the RX (an 09 so out of warranty) to the same Toyota dealer they take their Matrix to because they really like the tech, and it costs not much more to service than the Matrix.

yea, they're everywhere around here too...there's a reason they sell so well...they're very good cars.

Yeah, the 'maintenance service' I think is just basically a bunch of checks and a bit of lube on pivots on top of the oilchange.

Never having something new enough to worry about warranty before, I wonder how fussy they are about:

a) how much you get done (brake fluid changed every 32,000km seems like a lot), and
b) where you get it done (are receipts for oil and filter enough?)

I could see getting the oil changed once a year with synthetic at Lexus and calling it good.

Test drove another used RX350 last night, a F-sport this time. Beautiful shape, liked the look of it compared to a regular one, and seemed to ride just fine. A series I though, so missing some features the wife was looking for (no blind spot, parking sensors, heated wheel, HUD). She commented 'that Rav4 hybrid really pulled in comparison', which I thought was interesting. The V6 is a sweet engine, but it doesn't have the right now grunt of electric.

Tried out a few more vehicles in various showrooms:

NX200t: much narrower inside than the RX, felt pretty small, compounded by the large dash and short roof height. Very poor rear visibility out the back ruled it out. Base version in our price range missing many useful features, and the cost of the add on packages would buy a Micra or two

Forester XT: great visibility, but felt like a kid's toy inside compared to the RX

Highlander: even though it is not that huge, feels like a monster sized thing, with flat seats and a high dash far away

Regular Rav4: more solid feeling than the Forester, but the RX seems to have spoiled us. And escalates in price quickly when you add features

The Highlander to me feels large as well.  The newest one is larger than mine for sure, but the fairly deep dash to me makes it feel even bigger than it is.  I love the shallow dash on my Gen 1, but the downside is the upright windscreen that makes it much more brick-like on the highway.  The Highlander is so versatile - only a van I think offers more utility.  The RX lacks the third row and the shape of the cargo space is less functional - but the lux part o the RX is what makes it a top seller - along with the ease of driving.

The used prices of the RXs seem outrageous until you really think about what a new one is priced at.  Then it shocks me that there are that many people around that can spend $70K+ on an SUV.  Our family income is quite a bit above average and no way in hell I'd blow seventy large on a car.  How do they sell so many of these things?  The bonus for regular folks is a nice supply of used ones for the price of a new Camry.

My SIL was a service writer for a Honda dealer until last year , he said with all the new sensor on a car , the cost of repair out side of warranty is scary

Tried a couple more on the weekend, another used RX, this one with blind spot/heated wheel/parking sensors, and a couple of new Mazda CX-5's, a 2017 GS and a 2017 GT, both with Tech packages.

The RX was as appealing as ever, with an interior like a rich persons briefcase, but this one had some hail damage and $10,000 front end accident on the carproof. And the battery was dead as a doornail. It looked perfect however and drove beautifully once they got is started, and the extra features did seem useful.

The Mazda's drove very nicely but the wife did not like the seats, felt they were way too hard. Did not feel like a big jump over the old CRV either, just newer.

$10,000 is not that much damage unless it was a steal of a deal I would wait until you found the right one.
What year was it ?

I agree with the $10K; not a huge repair.  If it drives straight and does not vibrate at various highway speeds it's fine.

So the very common mental struggle continues; used LUXURY or new SENSIBLE.  ;D

I know for guys my age, you hear "TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR REPAIR" and you freak out.  But, one of my friends hit a deer and it was $12K and his car didn't have structural damage.  Panels and paint.
