Why are most newer Toyotas so damn ugly?
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kickboxing.

These are great rigs, but they kinda lost my interest as soon as they stopped offering the manual... to me that was the quintessential 4-Runner  ;D

Great review! Solid, honest SUV that doesn't try to be something it's not.
But....wtf is going on with the front end? Toyota hit it with the ugly stick.

Ahh, one of a dying breed of true body-on-frame off-road (not to be confused with gravel-road) capable vehicles.

I truly hope Toyota keeps making these as one day I might be able to afford to own one.

Agreed. The 4Runner is a formidable off-roader but the styling...

You're the only one they lost.  No one took the top off and people complained about the cold and noisy interiors.  Toyota responded with a complete overhaul of the 4Runner.  Also, manual trans sales fell like a stone tossed from a plane through the 90s and then came to a halt at the turn of the century, so Toyota once again, responded to customers and lost the manual.  The FJ-Cruiser was supposed to be the manual-available hardcore off-road machine, but most people preferred the comfier and still capable 4Runner.

Quick, someone find Fobroader a Delorean, let him return to a time when 4Runners had removable tops.

While it looks like the US-made Tacoma, the 4Runner is made in Japan.  So hopefully won't suffer from the Tacoma's ills...
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

Actually 89 was the last year of the convertible top. 85 was the last year for the solid front axle and first year for the fuel injection....so 85 is the year I want   ;D

I was looking at these on Toyota's website a while ago. The horrific front end would be a deal breaker for me, but I was surprised to see that the Limited model has completely different styling.

While still pretty bad, I could at least live with the Limited's looks. Too bad it only comes with the silly 20" rims, but I'm sure the dealer would trade you for some proper 17s.

Good luck finding a survivor! IIRC, this era of Toyota trucks were notoriously prone to rust.

It's the low horsepower from the era.  They couldn't even outrun rust.

Good, because Marty McFly and Doc Brown didn't go back to 89.

Lol!

But the engine will run forever (understressed/overbuilt) as shown on Top Gear.
