In day to day driving, I accelerate at the same rate whether I was driving the 148hp Crossy, the 256hp Outback or the current 170hp Passat, just like the rest of the traffic around me.

Look at the Forester (2.5L) vs Crosstrek (2.0L) fuel economy numbers!!

Look at the Forester (2.5L) vs Crosstrek (2.0L) fuel economy numbers!!I'm pretty sure that Subaru would put in a different engine if they thought there was a business case. Maybe there are manufacturing constraints or regulatory issues that enter the fray that we aren't aware of. I found the 2.0L engine to be nicer than the 2.5L as far as NVH, and the difference in horsepower didn't feel as large as the numbers suggest.

If they don't have the production capacity for additional 2.5L engines, or if they have an over supply of 2.0L engines but need an engine that size for tax purposes in specific markets, the business case can fall apart pretty rapidly.
CAFE?
keep in mind CAFE regulations too...while trading off 5 mpg for more power might not matter to you (or me), shaving 5 mpg off a vehicle they might sell 300,000 units of makes a pretty big difference in their CAFE numbers as a whole.

If it's even 1, I'd be surprised.

"One Qashqai trait that Nissan may not broadly tout is the fuel economy of the manual transmission model. While CVT-equipped Qashqais (in Rogue Sport guise) made TTAC headlines for consuming more fuel than the larger, more powerful Rogue, the front-wheel-drive Qashqai with the six-speed manual is even thirstier, at 10.0L/100km in the city and 8.1 on the highway."http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2017/05/nissan-rogue-sport-truly-cheap-qashqai-canada-six-speed-thirst/

Hell my Mirage has 100hp, and it is adequate for the small car that weighs under 2000lbs. The Crosstrek weighs over 1100lbs more with not much more power and a power-sapping AWD system.

It's a sensible looki vehicle, and I think it looks quite good. No silly angles everywhere. But a 2.0? I have no interest in looking at it then. This isn't Europe!
