The S-Type sold 15k in its 2002 introductory year, with sales tapering to 8.9k by 2005. The XF has never sold more that 8600.

People liked the styling of the S-Type, but it was left on the vine too long. There should have been a new model by 2006.

I still lust over this thing.  Expensive, but relatively reasonable and hella fuel efficient!

I'm a cat person, case closed  ;)

So I got an indicated 7.6 without trying hard, on snow tires, and the Golf currently sits at 6.3. Same engine size, lots more car to carry around, just amazing fuel economy. Too bad I did not have the chance to take it on a long highway trip.

Love this thing for the FE and looks but R Sport is a little aspirational is it not?
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

For my money, I'd get one of the lower trims since all the chassis hardware stays constant (electronics evolve with the budget though). The R Sport trim makes a strange bed partner to the 2.0D, I admit.

I haven't really looked at the standard equipment list or option packages to figure out which I'd take, but I'm thinking a base model is likely very reasonably equipped.

Edit: gouging... Must get the prestige trim in order to get even heated front seats. You can option a heated windshield without heated seats!

I'd get the prestige 2.0D with a few option packs. $58,872 MSRP incl fees.

My tester had the heated windshield, and on one very cold spring morning, both the HVAC defog and the heated windshield turned on automatically. Neat! Heated steering wheel too, getting addicted to that (experienced in various cars, from Focus 3 cylinder EcoBoost to Volt 2.0).

What?  ??? The base model has an optional climate package with heated front and rear seats, heated windshield, and heated steering wheel for $1020.

Edit: I do think that at this price point, heated front seats (and a backup camera) should be standard though.

Why? It's really just a styling package. Personally I prefer its looks regardless of which powertrain it comes with.

A bit pricy for a 2L diesel with 180hp, no ?

but that was my point

kinda weird having aggressive aero and big intakes etc for a 2.0D, and then labelling it "R Sport"

all show and no go...but hey to each their own, as this is just me and my preference for car styling to ACTUALLY reflect the car underneath - I hate the trend of gaping intakes, vents, etc....wait....THEY ARE ALL FILLED IN WITH PLASTIC.  ::)

Sure, sure. But it's still a 2.0 diesel, with the clatter, the vibrations, etc. Hardly the epitome of a luxury car/brand. At this price point, in a luxury car such as a Jaguar, I would expect a couple more cylinders and the an engine that runs on the noble fuel.

I agree with you. In Europe, I've seen quite a few 316i or 316d with the M Package. Even a 314d... It's all about appearance. A bit ridiculous if you ask me.

I'm with ya, a 4 cylinder gas or diesel does not belong in a luxo barge at this price level IMO.

Yeah, I don't get it, this really dilutes the brand and actual R Sport models actually lose value if some welfare spec 4 banger can get the R sport badge.
Lighten up Francis.....

Absolutely, its like Mcdonalds having a Gordon Ramsay meal, cheapens the whole brand.

You don't need proof. Just think about it. Let's say you're loaded and want to buy the top of the line R Sport model, with the engine, the body kit, the badge and all the bells and whistles. But then you notice that some guy you know leases a 2.0d with the R package and for much less money he has a car that looks just like the one you want.

Are you still going to consider splurging on the top of the line model if you know that it'll be mistaken for the everyman's Jag ? You want exclusivity, you want premium, you don't want to get a car that looks like other cars half the price.
