I've just noticed this. I found the same thing after having the recall done. The engine is more coarse. Seems to work much the same though.

I'm not sure about fuel consumption, but if there is a difference, it would be pretty tiny, based on my last few tanks.

Que?  You drive a TDI?  Or was there something for the TSI's?

TSI. There were two recalls, and after the second one, the engine sounds different.

I forgot that you had a TDI.

Weird.  I wonder what they did.

Another positive change with Phase2 of the emissions recall was the reprogramming of the DSG in sport mode.  It doesn't hold the gears as long and now feels a lot more natural.

Wow. Two years and 50k km already.  The first year saw 30k km but the arrival of the Highlander (and my wife working 3 days per week) means it's not seeing as many miles.

Unfortunately, there isn't much in the way of issues to report.

- The trim piece around the DSG shifter came loose and will need to be repaired at the next service.  Since it's absurdly sharp it's now covered in green painters tape
- It needs a new windshield, coming soon, courtesy of a crack
- I needed to install a new tail light
- The driver's door latch is a little bit stiffer than it used to be. I'll spray some lubricant into it to see if that makes it smoother
- We got a flat a few weeks ago.

And yeah, that's it beyond regular maintenance.

We still love the car.

City mileage is between 7-8 depending on the weather.  highway is between 5-6 depending weather and if I have the roofbox installed.  Sub 4's on the highway is certainly doable by someone who isn't me.

It's been a surprisingly good winter car.  The diesel block over the front tires gives it lots of traction.  The block heater is great on cold days.  And there's an electric auxiliary heater that pumps heat out in about a minute.  The only feature it's missing is a heated steering wheel, which NA didn't get on the Mk7.

The best feature of this car is how great it is at covering highway miles.  It's quiet, smooth and the torque of the diesel means effortless passing.

Not looking forward to the upcoming 60k km service that includes oil change, fuel filter change and DSG fluid change.  Were I to guess, that will be about a $700 bill at the dealership.  I'll call few shops to see what they charge.  The dealership has a transmission and engine warranty for the life of the car if you service it there.  I'm not usually one to buy into that but if it's only $100 or so more I think it's worth it.

I really enjoy these long term real-world updates.  Loving a car and living with a car can be different things entirely.  I love those TDIs and am so pi$$ed at VW for peeing in the Diesel pool and making everyone have to jump out.

It's being repaired under warranty.

And a surprisingly common issue on the Mk7.  My 8 year old is the one who did it, he got a reasonably sized cut on his finger.

Wow. Two years and 50k km already.

Great report and glad things are going well, not that I thought differently.

Either you hit 88 mph and went back in time or love letting your kid stand up with the door open while driving. Think you just one upped the person in Toronto transporting stuff with the doors open.  :rofl2:

Noticed the catchy and sharp edge on that trim shortly after I got my GTI and though right away that you can cut yourself or break it with a wrong move. Noticed on the late models on the dealership floor that it was fixed (I think MY18+). After few close calls with the sharp, flimsy piece of trim, I proactively asked the dealer to replace it and they did without objection.

The whole shifter boot and shifter is replaced; at least this is what they did in my GTI. The new piece is properly finished so no more issues. This was the one flimsy piece of trim I noticed in the GTI from day 1. I'm glad it's fixed now.

Another year, another update.

It's currently sitting at 70k km.

No new issues to report, sorry all.  There is a recall due but I have yet to get around to having it done: https://www.ctvnews.ca/autos/vw-recalls-117k-cars-in-canada-to-fix-potential-rollaway-problem-1.4562118

Maintenance is still pretty expensive, admittedly I have been going to the dealership which helps nothing.  The 60k service including DSG fluid change, oil change and fuel filter change ran just over $800, and that was with calling around and getting them to match another local dealer, saving about $100.

I changed the rims this spring with a new set of Pirelli P7 tires.  They are all that I was hoping for.  Smooth (smoother even than the 15" WS-80's), quiet and composed.  I definitely recommend them for someone wanting a GT tire.

We still love the car. The GSW is the perfect combination of a small footprint with a generous cargo area.   High diesel prices in relation to regular (~20-30 c/L) have taken a bit of the shine off of the TDI savings, but I can't do much about that.

A car has to well suit your needs to be enjoyable, and be reliable. Enjoy yours.

I remember my '88 Jetta TDI maintenance & filtre replacement done at the dealer was expensive but it was nowhere close to this above price some 25ish years later... In that 1989-2004 era I had long distance to drive on regular basis, diesel was the way to go but it was bugging me to always pay higher price per liter than premium, even if I know its contains more energy per volume.

Now a PHEV like the Volt fits my need and the most expensive maintenance item has been 2013 Volt #2 (brake exception as wearable item @ 135 000km) with traction battery liquid cooling replacement after 5 years / 240 000 km whichever comes first  ;) ) IIRC it was about $350 due labour extensive.

Oil change and fuel filter change are around $110 each.

If I were to do it again I would still get the diesel.  But I would look a LOT harder to find a manual.
