I kind of dig these......especially considering I drive alone 99% of the time and don't really need to carry anything more than say, a large suitcase and a rucksack when I go to the airport.

In US dollars, it's around 20 k$ which is pricey. And I don't know if it'd appreciate the rural intercity stints I do (130km/h for hours at a time).

These cars have their place but I don't think they would ever be on a Micra/whatever GM equiv. driveway. They simply do not compare in any way, especially price wise. So that I suspect that the 'make a statement' reason is mostly what it is about...easy 'enough' park-ability with much more use-ability, being available elsewhere. And that's alright...whatever turns you on...in this sector. Why not.

I don't know why the fuel consumption rating is so high though (9). Compared to an SUV maybe but compared to a closer class it does not seem good at all. It seems to me that the Micra came in at 6.6 l/100...with it's much greater space. Probably there are subcompacts that impress more also. The shut door gap seemed large.

A great little vehicle though...what's not to like.

These utilitarian in concept city dwellers should be available for 2-hour rent alongside city bicycles at $2/hr.
Paying half of the asking price to actually OWN one is beyond my comprehension.
At the as tested price of $27k, it pretty much competes with my Forester (or at least getting there) with the same level of fuel economy.
Sure, there are people who will pay premium for a fancy nose ring.

Perfect! Once these become ubiquitous, the hourly rates will come down, too. That's the only way I can look at these cars.

The best version of the Smart is the EV. With a $14K rebate in Ontario, they make a decent city car.

an interesting vehicle for sure, but i agree with the others that at $27k, you've really got want this car to buy it.

They're 39 cents an hour up to $13.95 an hour last time I rented them. They were an awesome alternative to taxis.

typical MB and optioned accordingly.  ;D

2017 Q1 Sales: -81% to 93 — Soon to enter an even narrower niche of pure electric cars, the smart fortwo will lose its internal combustion engine with a look to the future. In the meantime, sales of the fortwo are crumbling in Canada after 2016 perked up from an all-time low in 2015. Mercedes-Benz sold more than 4,000 smarts in Canada in 2005 and more than 3,700 in 2008, but the fortwo is on track for fewer than 400 sales in 2017.

The Smart is a sweet $13K car.

This is the only way this "car" makes sense....even then, the Micra is a better vehicle all around.
Lighten up Francis.....
