Nice looking rig.

The engine seems great, good power, good fuel economy. I don't know why Mazda would not put heated rear seats in the CX-9, the CX-5 has them...

Prices start at $45k ? A bit pricey...

That's the GT. A FWD GS is $37k, an AWD GS is $40k including freight.

Ok, that's better.  :)

Proof that a large-ish SUV doesn't need to be weird looking (Murano) or bland (almost everything else in the mainstream segment).  This is a terrific-looking rig.
Wokeism is nothing more than the recognition and opposition of bigotry in all its forms.  Bigots are predictably triggered.

I wasn't sure how well this has been selling. It's got room for improvement.

Yup. And Canadians don't tend to get larger CUVs.

Hmmmm there's definitely more to it....when Porsche can sell almost as many Macans as Mazda sold CX-9s, it's definitely a sign of market rejection! Perhaps it's the tiny engine...!

Off topic: the YTD below clearly shows how the market is slowly killing sedans...

The Macan is also the cheapest product from an aspirational brand, while the CX-9 is the most expensive product from a fairly niche player.

I've seen maybe 3 of these in the wild. A shame as it's quite nice.

I'm not surprised as I rarely see any older CX-9s around.   When we were shopping for a new car in 2009 the local dealer had a leftover CX-9 they were selling at a very good price.  I briefly considered it for us, but we decided against a suv in general.

Does Mazda market it?  I'm not sure.  And it's true that Americans just don't see Mazda as a major player.  When I was driving in the US, I noticed a distinct lack of Mazda cars - hell, here you can barely change lanes without side-swiping a 3, but there?  Nope.  Americans don't see Mazda because no trucks, no van and mostly oddball cars that are on the small side.

Toyota has 15% of the US SUV market with the Highlander and 4Runner and Ford takes a another big chunk with the Explorer and Edge.  Want big sales numbers?  Forget quirky.  Make a box on wheels with amenities and a good sized V-6 engine.  Only Subaru makes much of a dent with the Outback that's not a "conventional" product.

Americans like homogeneous products.  If you want to really succeed there in terms of volume, you need to either set the segment (Lexus RX) or offer something similar to everyone else - like the standard SUV market.  It's possible to "buck the system" ala Subaru, but it takes a lot of effort.  Subaru's invested a lot of time and effort.

Thankfully, Canadians will buy more quirky and interesting products, so Mazda has done much better here.  But, that said, we still like a big box on wheels with a V-6 for our SUVs.

Okay...replace Macan with Toyota Venza. My point still stands :)

Agree with parts of what you said! Had Mazda priced the CX-9 competitively and offered more engine options they could have easily tapped into the Highlanders and Explorers market...Mazda has no competitive advantage at this moment, I am their target customer and I have absolutely no desire to give up my Explorer Sport for an underpowered Mazda CX-9 - and mind you, they cost about the same!
