BMW X4. The "GLE" "coupe" is the X6 competitor.

I feel like BMW does tacky stuff for purse dog and Russian gangster types better than Mercedes. G-Class being the very notable exception.

Sounds like a "GLC" 43 AMG non coupe would be a nice ride though.

I hate the new naming convention. What was wrong with ML and GLK and GL etc?

For the record I think this car is a bit of a Susan Boyle.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.
That makes me feel angry!

THE ENTIRE SEGMENT NEEDS TO BURN IN HELL

...along with the marketing schmucks that though of them

anyone who buys one, I am sorry, is a complete tool
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other about the styling of the GLC coupe, but I do think this angle is pretty good:

They're trying to be more consistent.

A, B, C, E, S represents the size.

GL means SUV/crossover.

So you know GLS > GLE > GLC > GLA.

Supposedly there's a GLB coming which will be a compact 7-seat crossover with G-wagen inspired styling. Could be interesting.

I totally agree, we all have very different tastes [myself especially I admit]. But I at least buy vehicles with a function.

These things are good at NOTHING:

- compromised interior room vs a wagon or hatchback or even a traditional CUV ffs
- compromised offroad ability with huge rims, sporty low profile tires
- terrible fugly styling
- poor aerdynamics, poor fuel economy
- heavy and top heavy and thus not very sporty vs a hatch or wagon
- IT IS NOT A COUPE

again, whoever buys this deserves all the derision Clarkson reserved for the buyers of the X6

Your reasons for not wanting one of these don't have a facking thing to do with why someone else might want one.  Don't be so damn judgemental.  Christ.

All of this ground has been covered before.  And basically everyone here is going to agree.

The buyers of these things like them because a) they ride high and resemble an SUV/CUV, while at the same time b) they look "better" (very subjective) and more sporty to their eyes relative to their respective platform mate.

Anyone buying anything remotely in this class isn't doing so for any practical reasons anyway.   Basically anything we buy, but especially luxury cars, are done for emotional reasons....if you like it, buy it.

No different than nutjobs who would buy Alfas over the competition  ;D

Damn straight I am judgmental [although I overstepped by mentioning owners] - these things are ruining the auto industry: look at showrooms now - they are almost all CUVs, as manufacturers try and fill every damn micro-niche, as for some unknown reason people keep buying the things. Cars are being given the shaft in terms of R&D, less trim options, less body styles, less transmission or drive options...and then are given even less after manufacturers say "see, nobody is buying them, they are buying the CUVs that we are stuffing the showrooms with 20000 different options" So traditional cars, to say nothing of the more sporting types, keep getting marginalized.

...please, let me know why anyone would want one of these coupe CUV-SAV things? Other than the oxymoronic "fashion" statement.

am I wrong? Please, explain how I am and I will totally admit it. I totally am being a judgmental prick, but when a vehicle is as cancerous [to borrow a term from the kids] as these things, the vehicle deserves it. Local Ford dealer here has almost all CUVs in its showroom, same for VW, was even the same at the Chev dealer I worked at a few years ago. The manufacturers need to be told "enough, stop building endless variations on a theme" - how do you tell them that? Stop buying the damn things.

So, sorry for attacking the owners, should not have done that. Will keep my hate for the CUVs and the manufacturers. People can buy what they want, and I have no right to attack them for a vehicle that, in their eyes at least, fits their needs. But if this thing does, I am really interested in knowing how.

Yeah, I am a nutjob that bought an Alfa over the competition, and would do so again. Watch this drive by Tarquini [who started LAST] and Simoni and tell me you would not be moved as a 10 year old...

Jesus man.  Yes CUV's are popular.
Get over it or seek therapy.

I will try and get over it, but this forum venting IS my therapy...other than digitally blowing stuff up in video games...better that than taking it out on the road or at the office - you guys can just write me off as a nut and tell me to shut up, and we can move on no harm done  :P

I get the consistency argument, but i lament the loss of historical value.

They better never rename the SL.

Also how does GLB make any sense if it seats 7 and looks like a rolling box while the GLC seats 5 and looks like a jelly bean.

You're an swerver.

As other has mentioned most of us are going to agree with the philosophy that these things are fashion statements over say the regular SUV style they are replacing. But if my wife wanted one or one of my friends bought one I'm not going to punch them in the face or berate them as to why they bought it. At the end of the day it's still a nice ride. Nt where my money would go but whatever. Different strokes for different folks.

As for CUVs ruining the market...whatever. The people have spoken. There are still plenty of options out there if you're looking for an enthusiast ride. I also find it funny you're all high horse on this as I don't see a purchased from the dealer car with a manual transmission under your name. If you're buying used you're part of the problem. Further you've stated your next car is going to be a model 3 - hardly a purchase that supports the continuation of enthusiast cars.

you make some good points - yeah I am an ass and would actually not berate anyone for buying one, but gently ask why??? Still, more car than I can afford so no lake to stand on and all that...

Yeah, I bought my Alfa used. When it was new I was like 10. Oh, and it was offered ONLY as a manual. Proper Alfa. The Saab yes was also bought used as we could only afford that [$12k], and an auto, because my wife drives it and she doesn't know how to drive three pedals [I wanted the bright red Saab Aero Wagon with 6sp - was even the same price!] . That indeed will be replaced by the Model 3, which is essentially the enthusiast choice compared to CUVs in the segment of hybrid / EVs. It is still a sport sedan compared to the CUVs that pretend to be sporty. If I get a dream job and lots of extra money, you bet your ass I am ordering from Europe an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde with a manual as the fun car.
