A few random thoughts;

*  My eyes must be deceiving me because this looks a class up in size from Rav 4 and CRV.
*  I actually thought this had been out longer than 2013 - but surely an all new model can't be far off?
*  Nice to see a mid level trim on any car tested these days.
*  But yeah, those wheels look tiny under that big body (cure Sir O to rage against oversize wheels  ;D )
*  I'd expect better highway economy from the base 4 pot, but that can be the problem when the motor is 'just enough' for the mass it is moving.
*  Looks good in that colour!

i certainly don't miss our 2010 santa fe...  this generation is getting very old as been around since 2013.  mild refresh is minor at best.

we had the same engine/transmission combo and 2010 santa fe was a bit smaller than this version and it was underpowered and hard on fuel also.  only on long hwy drives it would go below the sub 10L / 100km.... otherwise it's around 11L / 100kms average.

why?  it's HEAVY!  our 2010 was near 3800lbs at that was front wheel drive version / awd version are over 4000lbs.

friends have the turbo version of this santa fe and after 3 years, it's showing badly it's age too.....

the prob with the santa fe, it looks good but degrades quickly.  materials used are very dated.  they work well during warranty but afterwards, they do need work - parts changing to keep it in good condition.

the base engine needs to be refreshed but very least they need to develop a new chassis and drop a good amount of weight!

A couple of my friends bought one because of its low financing rates. They haven't had any problems with them.
Is that colour new? I have not seen one on the road in that colour, I like it.

I agree that it's due for a all-new remodel soon. Maybe for 2019?

Funny...I did not find that the wheels looked small in diameter at all. When it is mentioned you look at it and the suggestion plays on your visual senses. They are not, I think, and this kind of vehicle needs more sidewall anyway. I will be looking for a vehicle in this class soon and this one is on the current list. It looks nice enough...as do others but I too find size hard to visualize these days. It has a reasonable tow rating, which some don't and not a complicated engine operating system or bandy box to contend with. The above Robin2 post is something to ponder but we have a 2006 Accent in the family that is still giving good service with no rust on it...perhaps the front seats are a bit worn. The Terrain is another option...I think it is the same size...but harder to park.

indeed... my friend with turbo version took the 8 years at 0% financing!

if you look at the Japanese brands, Subaru forester / mitsu outlander / Nissan rogue etc......  yes, they are smaller but not tiny in comparison but they are 500-700lbs lighter too.

on our 2016 rogue, on long trips we get low 7's on the highway in fuel economy.  on 80-90km/h roads, I got as low 6.4L on 80kms trip.  that's exceptional for awd suv.

on 2010 santa fe, we traded it in with 130k kms and changed front struts, front control arms, end links, and front axle.  Transmission needed work too as it banging badly when shifting from park to drive.

took Hyundai 4 months to replace front struts under warranty as they were backordered as it was VERY common issue.

These are due for a re-design soon, next year? I test drove one before I bought my Wrangler in 2014... great bang for the buck, but it just wasn't for me... wasn't crazy about the dash layout & design and it really didn't do much for me overall.

Interesting, I drove my Uncle's loaded SF Sport this weekend for a quick errand.

I still think they are one of the best looking designs in the class.  And they have aged really well which is impressive for something that isn't overly bland.

The ergonomics seemed fine and I was able figure out the controls pretty easily.

Power seemed only adequate and the steering didn't have much feel.  The sport mode seemed to quicken the throttle response and make the steering stiffer but didn't improve the feel at all.

They are happy with it and I bet it's a comfortable cruiser.

I wish they had made the V6 available on this "smaller" Santa Fe instead of forcing buyers to stretch (pardon the pun) to the fully loaded 3-row model.  I drove that top model and found it to be a really nice bit of kit.  But it was also pretty spendy.  That motor in a mid-level trim on the smaller Santa Fe would have been pretty sweet.  But that's all woulda coulda shoulda.  :)

you can get the V6 in mid-trim models in the Sorento, which is smaller than the Santa Fe XL, so that might worth a look too...also, the Sorento is on the all new chassis already (2016 and newer).

also, i don't find the wheels look too small.

they all are smaller, which of course helps them be lighter too.

the lightest of the bunch is the Forester at 3479 lbs...the heaviest is the RAV4 at 3605 lbs...this Santa Fe Sport is 3794 lbs...so yes, the Santa Fe is heavier, but it is also larger and the difference is not quite as much as you mentioned above.
