Saw one in flesh today. What a nice looking SUV. The only downside is that it was not red.

strange, 3 dealerships I know in the area don't have them yet.

I have seen 3! (not including the dealer!)

Yeah Mazdas are not very popular in this neck of the woods...but still, I assumed a few would show up here and there.

The Kelowna dealer has 7 GT's and 2 GS

Went and looked at the half-dozen '17s the local Mazda dealer has on the lot.  All were mid-trim GS's

Didn't exactly fall in love with it.   :-\   Need to see the GT's
Surprised me how much bigger the '17 looks, particulary width... the widemouth grille playing some tricks with the eye, I think..

The few 'old' 2016.5 GT models that were parked nearby looked better to my eye.  SWMBO agreed.
But.. only the 2017's have the heated steering wheel.  That of course is worth many many thousands of dollars...   :P

Hard to get the WOW factor in a mid-trim model (GS), usually the high end model is the one that catches the eye, with leather, sunroof and all the bells and whistles.

It looks like Mazda did a good job with this one, all of the reviews point to the high quality interior, worthy of the higher category if not premium.

I'm going to go check it out soon.

So I saw my first 2017 today.  It was a GS model and I think it looks TERRIBLE.  And this is coming from a Mazda fanboy....

The smaller wheels make it look really disproportionate and just emphasize the cheap plastic wheel wells.

Agreed. This describes what I saw as well.  The smaller wheels and the black wheel cladding looked awfully cheap.

Looked at it yesterday (Sunday) so was it just peering through the windows.  From what I could see, the interior looks nicely done.
Will go and have a closer look-see in the next few weeks

The previous gen has black cladding as well.  Smaller wheels?  Are they more lower profile then the previous gen?

The contrast with the white paint enhances the impression that the wheels are too small. They look like shopping cart wheels on this picture. With the dark paint like the previous picture, it looks a bit better.

Although of course, the big rims and the top trim models they usually come with always look better, but tires are more expensive to replace and ride comfort is affected.

^ I think there is a bigger wheel gap on the 17's (?)
The grey wheels don't help either, imo.

It's just hard to find pictures online with the GS trim.  Most are top of the line GT (test drives)

I think part of the issue is that I was looking at a Soul Red example (that red is stunning..)
But with the plastic around the wheels and the grey wheels, it didn't make a great first impression.
With the GS, I'd be buying grey or black..

Anywayz since we are ballers, we'd be buying a GT anyway .. :P

Then just got the vehicle in grey to match your other one!

I agree, but I still had this problem with the previous gen (the cladding), and other CUVs.  It's not unique to the 2017.

I spent some time looking at a 2017 in the Carling Mazda dealership here in Ottawa and I quite liked it.  My wife drives a 2016.5 GT, so I was looking at some of the changes to see what improvements were made.

Overall, the cabin seems to be finished to a slightly higher level.  That said, I don't like the center stack on the 2017 and greatly prefer the stack on the ours. I love that there are hvac vents for rear passengers; that is a major let down on the 2016.5.  I also really like the fact that there are usb outlets in the reaf armrest; another missing feature on my wife's car. The rear seats also have a slightly more comfortable angle to them.

The power lift gate is just something to break down the road and, interestingly, it didn't seem to have a sensor to stop its travel when there was something in the way. I stuck my arm in while closing it to see what would happen, and it just kept pushing against my hand.  I had to pull pretty hard to stop its progress, so anything caught in its path is likely to get crushed.  I'm not sure how this is handled on other vehicles, but I wouldn't want this feature on mine.

Visually, I like both vehicles.  That new red paint is gorgeous.

Overall, I would say it is a nice improvement in a few small areas that make it a better family vehicle.

Cheers,

Jay
