so, the BMW won the best keyfob award?

i would rather have the key-card.  probably easier to store, and since you never have to take out your key out of the pocket anyway nowdays, i would rather it be as flat as possible.

Renault has used key "cards" for a few years now; my Renault Clio back in 2015 had such a card, with the card slot in front of the shifter. Thought it was clever- props to the French for figuring it out.

Back in 2003 my BMW key/keyfob had a rechargeable battery that was charged by induction when the key was in the ignition switch.   I liked that.

When I took my BMW in for servicing the service tech was able to download all the car's information from the key fob. The damn thing is a mini computer.  :P
I'm afraid to ask what it would cost to replace one.  :-\

You actually didn't post a picture of a $4 replacement. That's a pricier chip key. You need these.

Sorry, didn't see the chip in that one. I got the fancy black plastic keys at Canadian Tire, sans chip, for about $4 or 5 each.

Volvo wins.  I like the Genesis key card (which must be new - mine came with a very unremarkable fob  :( ).  The Porsche fob looks surprisingly cheap - I suddenly feel better about mine.  :rofl2:

Lexus uses cards, yes.

One of the fobs for the Highlander broke.  The case broke.  I bought a new case for $6 and swapped the old guts into it.  Easy peasy.  Highlights how nice it is sometimes to not have the fob and metal key in the same housing.

The Corolla has an integrated key/fob and it's very easy and convenient to use - not fancy but it works.  It feels robust so I'm hoping it won't need replacing - so far so good.

I've had a few broken fobs - one button broke on our Nissan Quest fob. It was fine because I hate carrying fobs in the pocket so I gave the wife mine. We had a couple older Caravans that came with broken fobs. Again at least one worked so the wife was ok.

My Mazda 2 came with a normal key - no fob.

One nice thing about a key , you can alway hide a spare key somewhere just in case you lose or lock your keys inside the truck  :-[

I (accidently) broke one of those GM keys off in the ignition of my beater Sierra pickup in university.   Made it one of the first "keyless" start pickups.   Just turn the ignition column and let er rip.

Fobs:  The BMW looks very cool, but will surely be a $1,000 replacement when it dies in 3 years.   I like the Volvo aesthetically.

Likely a replaceable battery.

The key fob for the 3er (E90) we have is Comfort Access, thus no longer chargeable like the E46/E83 earlier keys, but the battery is a CR 2016 or something easy you can pick up anywhere.

I would think a 2 or 3 instead of the 1 you put for price....because FGC.

Doesn't Jaguar have some fancy bracelet thingy that kind of looks like a fitbit?  How come that didn't make the list.  I'd find that to be about as useful as the key card idea.
