That's way too much. If you want a stop gap bike you should be spending no more that $6K-$7K MAX IMHO.

FWIW I sold the FZ-09 in absolutely mint condition for about $5.5K. $10K on that KTM is ridiculous.

I'd go for a gently used 650-700. I know I personally have an obsession with small displacement bikes but it's an exception.

If I get any 600 cc bike it won't really be a stop gap - it will be what I ride for at least this year and next.  Hopefully by 2023 Tridents will be thick on the ground.

Yeah - this one is overpriced - but what would be a palatable number on this?  Used 2017 2018 690s are on Kijiji for not a lot less - $7500 to $8500.  I know that older ones can be had for less, but I have more comfort buying the newest lowest mileage used offering I can find as opposed to the cheapest / best value.  Everyone keeps saying buy used, but the plum choices on the used market are not a whole lot less than new.

Brand new Duke 390 FTW.

New Duke 390 remains a safe and affordable purchase option.

And can I just give mad props to KTM for the lightness and compactness of their bikes?  Sat on a Duke 890 and it did NOT feel a whole lot different than the 390.

No they don't until you ride them. The bigger reciprocating mass will make itself be felt.

Plus side of the lower displacements is that they sell quick with relatively minimal depreciation.

Oh for sure - but with many other brands even stepping up one level from 400 to 650 or 650 to 900 and the bike feels noticeably taller, wider, heavier and generally more intimidatingly huge.  Not so with KTM.  Even just looking at the 890 and 390 side by side, they look about the same size.

Re the new versus used, I checked out used dirt bikes (b/c strangely no one here accepted my offer to borrow their dirt bike!) over new and the price of used dirt bikes is staggeringly high.  You may as well buy new and then resell...

New stock is hard to find in any toys this year, so used is much more valuable.
BTW, by dirt bike do you mean off-road toy, or dual-sport?    I recently saw a few motocrossers at a decent price locally

You're both right. Double jeopardy for buyers right now - low stock if you want new you might not get your choice. High prices if you go used. #firstworldproblems.

I sound like a broken record...but the 690 was the best blend of power/handling of any bike I've ever owned. Ever.

If you were a "good" rider, it made you "great". The stuff I could do on that bike! And yea..the 690 was about the same weight as the 390..with almost double the power!

Being able to back that bike into a corner (easily) with IQ on the back (or solo) is an unforgettable memory of that bike.

But they are expensive!

This is a sweet deal I think... good bang for the buck!

https://www.autotrader.ca/a/ktm/390%20duke/val-d'or/quebec/5_51843154_20181009183907519/?ms=motorcycles_atvs&showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&orup=4_5_5&pc=K2C%202H8&sprx=1000

And UShip will deliver if for ~$381... still a good price on the bike including shipping. Next spring you sell it in the GTA & break even, or down the shipping costs at the most.

Thanks folks.

Ron - that's a pretty enthusiastic recommendation on the 690. What do you think is a reasonable price for that one?

Gurgie that is a good deal. And I wondered about shipping for some bikes that I have seen that are a bit further away. A lot of good ones in Ottawa for some reason.

Rob - just say when man!

Well they've been discontinued as the new 490 twins are on their way in.

Pre-Covid I'd see them for $8K, brand new.

Now?  I'd be surprised if you could find one for $10K.

And yes, the 690 is the best bike I've ever owned...by far.  And I'd have the new 690 SM if it didn't cost MORE than the spectacular 890 Duke.

Duke 390 retails for MSRP of $6,299.  Duke 690 retails for MSRP of $11,899.

That is a big jump.

Wow it was that much when last sold in 2018? Considering how many accessories are on that bike I understand why they want $10k. But then it has been sitting with them for a loooong time and will become an even harder sell when the replacement for the 690 comes out. At $8500 I'd be sorely tempted.

This 2012 Vstrom 650 asking $5299 has electronic cruise control on it.
