Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

That sucks, but at least he looks like he didn't get hurt too badly.  Not much you could do to avoid that.

Awful!!  Geez...

I think the oddest thing I've hit is a turkey.  Almost took my head off.  Did the same thing with a pheasant.  Both off road.

Hit a frozen dead cow in the winter once (thought it was a drift)

Garage smelled like something rotting. We looked up and down as we though there may be a dead mouse or something.  Turned out there was a dead bird in the cowling where the head pipes are on my CB500X.  Yuck.

And I still hate taking a bumble bee or other large bug on the neck at speed!!

Thankfully no wayward wheels though!!

What's the oddest thing you've hit, if any?

Well, he looked to be pacing that green car on the left. Might have had a chance to avoid the wheel if he'd left himself an opening on at least one side, but he was three across with the truck.

You're never truly scared again driving a 4 wheeled vehicle. Call them 'cages' for a reason

technically, it was quite avoidable...but it's likely quite natural to fixate on the target (target fixation is a big cause of accidents)...he simply needed move slightly left or right to avoid the tire...but you need to be attentive, aware of your surroundings (know where the cars in the other lane are relative to you) and ready to make a move...it's all easy to say when watching a youtube video from home...it's tougher when actually out (trying to) enjoy the ride...and you only get better by riding more and learning, which of course exposes you to these scenarios at times.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

If he knew a wheel was coming and looking for it, yes possibly avoidable. As a complete surprise, very much unexpected, more difficult to avoid. In this case target fixation was probably trying to understand what the hell was coming at him.

That and he had nowhere to go, sandwiched between vehicles. Going to the side meant taking the chance he'd get bowled underneath the truck or into the car beside him

yes, as that would likely be a natural reaction...when riding in a center lane like that, always try to be in a position where there isn't someone directly beside you (either side)...that allows you the freedom to move a little easier should you need to make an evasive maneuver...he also had almost 3 seconds to react...the trick is getting to a point where it becomes instinct rather than having to actually think about it.

I think it was unavoidable. Sure he had time to react but there was no guarantee which way that tire was going to bounce either. He chose door #2 and so did the tire.

the fact it was a cruiser doesn't help either...they are a little slower to react (move out of the way)...a standard/sport bike or scooter is much easier/quicker to pivot on.

I've been pretty lucky so far, with no major strikes of any sort.  I've run over a few smaller roadkill that have startled me (serves me right for following too closely), and certainly had a few june bugs and bees strike me in the neck before.  While on the highway, a truck kicked up a pretty hefty bolt that struck my brother in the knee causing such pain he worried it had been fractured (it wasn't).

Sometimes it does freak me out how something otherwise small and benign can do us in out there though.

This story still bothers me:

So that wheel that hit the biker was not from a car, it was rolled down a hill and onto the highway by some a$$hole
