The new CB100R also appeals, but is likely too much bike.

Have a peek at the CB650R. Family styling similar to the 1000R and has a fantastic I4 engine.

Around $9k, new.

The 650 engine is boring as hell apparently. Jeff tested one.

I find I4's a bit appliance like TBH, much prefer triples or twins.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

Boring in which way? Character? Performance?

Like you, I think Japanese I4s are so impeccably built that they do lack some character, perhaps. They here no sharp edges. I also prefer a single or twin over an I4.

But from a performance standpoint, I find I4s anything but boring...having driven many iterations of this engine. A 650 twin will have more character but would be down in performance to an I4 650cc.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Yeah not performance, just character.

Yea, it depends what you like....pretty much like cars.

Do you like turbo V6 vs NA V8 engines type of thing.

Am glad there's so many flavors to choose from though!

Yeah, its character was lacking.  Looked so cool and an extremely well-built bike (of course!), but just no fizz to it at all.  And it's not because it's a Japanese I4 -- Kawasakis always seem to have the spice, but Hondas (CBR600RR notwithstanding -- I've not ridden the 1000) seem bland.

But...  despite the relatively large displacement, the CB650 wouldn't be a terrible first bike.

Across 250, I've never heard of it, but it's cool.  This particular one is a $600 basket case project.

nothing wrong with the Scout 60...it's a really nice bike too...as well, typically, the smaller/lighter the bike you learn on, the easier it is to ride (within reason)...sport bikes are smaller and lighter, but also usually more powerful and may entice you to ride beyond your capabilities...cruisers, OTH, are typically a more relaxed ride...you are far less likely to try and set a land speed record on a Scout 60 than say a Honda CBR600RR.

There's practically no difference between the Scout 60 and the bigger Scout though, except for more power.   (Scout 60 is 6lbs lighter at 549lbs)
yea, i just assumed there would be more of a difference (thought the weight difference would be more)...makes sense though, the Sportster is the same from the 883 to the 1200 (in terms of the bike itself).

Just found out there are several versions of Sportsters:

1200 Custom
Roadster™
Iron 1200™
Iron 883™
Superlow®
Forty-Eight®
Forty-Eight® Special

I must have tripped over a Superlow,
Quote
Superlow's® low center of gravity gives it a lean angle of just over 24 degrees. Iron 883™ and Forty-Eight® Special both have right and left lean angles between 27 and 28 degrees
I guess you can't really lean these in turns :P

All of these JDM 250s were a hoot!  18-20,000+ RPM!

Right, right!

It looked like the North American katana 600/750 of that era. Model designation was similar (ie GSX600F)

So many cool JDM bikes

Meh. It's just drag racing with a band playing. Good editing though.

I thought the bikes were fantastic.  Not your typical drag-bikes.

The rules:
Quote
The technical rules to enter the Sultans of Sprint challenge are simple: the bike has to be powered by an aircooled 4 stroke twin cylinder engine and custom built for speed & acceleration !

To keep the challenge fair & open to all speedfreaks the engine capacity is limited according to engine type (2 or 4 valves) and to the eventual (& highly recommanded) use of supercharging (NOS, turbo, blower).

ALLOWED ENGINE CAPACITY
max 1400cc / 2 valves without NOS/blower/turbo
max 1200cc / 2 valves with NOS or blower or turbo
max 1000cc / 2 valves with NOS and blower or turbo
max 1000cc / 4 valves without NOS/blower/turbo
max 900cc / 4 valves with NOS or blower or turbo
max 800cc / 4 valves with NOS and blower or turbo

Found an interesting Canadian online seller, Motomike.ca

https://motomike.ca/collections/helmets-and-visors/products/ls2-light-range-helmet-mx-motocross-black-or-white-free-ship-canada-usa?variant=15044009885762
Anyone need a nice size M dirt-bike helmet for $140?

He seems to buy up NOS and liquidation/end of line stuff, similar to what a local shop, Re-Gear, here does, except Motomike does parts as well.

BTW, regarding Re-Gear, worth a rest-stop if you're going by Kingston on the 401, they're not even 5 minutes north.   (https://www.re-gear.ca/kingston/index.html)
