I haven’t seen a bike that can’t be insured in Alberta. I remember Kawasaki years ago had to fire sale their ZX14Rs originally allocated for Quebec elsewhere around the country because they couldn’t be insured there.

ICBC will insure anything, for a price.

It's easy to insure any stock bike in Alberta, but the big sports bikes will carry a premium.  Modded bikes are okay as long as you're not changing the power substantially.

Turbo your bike and you're suddenly uninsurable.

2018 Yamaha R3 ABS models are clearing out for $3,999 plus a free helmet. A local Edmonton area dealer is sweetening the deal for new riders by giving another $100 off for being a member of the local new rider Facebook group which works out to about $4700 out the door. Then Yamaha is also offering financing rates as low as 1.99% for 24 months, so that’s a brand new motorcycle for $200 a month. Note that they may try to charge a doc fee, do not pay it.

Crazy deal, and I thought the $5428 I paid last year was fantastic.

Considering the 2019 YZF-R3 is a notable improvement over the earlier models, I can see why they'd want to clear them out.

With the 2019 theres a revised suspension (Inverted fork), revised riding position, etc.... things that are apparent shortcomings on the pre-facelift model.

The engine was the biggest shortcoming IMO....at least for me.

Yea, the R3's engine is so disappointing that mlin32 and I both sold ours in just over a year.

Oh wait. :rofl2:

The 2019 also lost a few kg, has a cool new gauge cluster, and LED lights all around. But neither of us are rushing out to upgrade.

That pricing is tempting me to get my licence and go pick one up...

I keep putting off getting the motorcycle licence because at my age the insurance cost would be astronomical. I'm getting older now though

If you stick with a small bike it's not so bad.  Get a ZX10 or a 1300cc cruiser and rates climb exponentially.

My DRZ400 is dirt cheap to insure

First time I've ever been able to drive out there.   The reef is only above water a few times a month and most years not visible at all

Your pictures are making me want to visit NE NB. Despite having grown up in Fredericton I've only been north of Miramichi once. To pick up a minivan for my mom  :rofl2:.

I'll try to get up there in a couple weeks when I'm home.

I turn 26 in a couple weeks, so rates are quite crazy at my age in Ontario  >:(

no such thing in Canada...you want dirt cheap insurance, own bikes in the USA.

Wing mentioned he paid about $800 a year for his CB300F, that's crazy. I'm not a whole lot better, $541 for my R3.

I've been in a holding pattern, ready to upgrade this year and sell the R3 if I can. But given the training and track days I do, and the travel costs involved, the budget just isn't there. I rent bikes when practicable- for example in a couple weeks I have an outing at Circuit Dijon Prenois on a R6.

Surprisingly in its class, I'm not terribly unsatisfied with the R3's engine- partially because I have tune. Right now I'm most unhappy with the riding position. Even its smaller brother, the YZF-R125 has a more aggressive riding position but I suspect this was an intentional decision on Yamaha's part.
