The 650 engine is boring as hell apparently. Jeff tested one.
I find I4's a bit appliance like TBH, much prefer triples or twins.
Boring in which way? Character? Performance?
Like you, I think Japanese I4s are so impeccably built that they do lack some character, perhaps. They here no sharp edges. I also prefer a single or twin over an I4.
But from a performance standpoint, I find I4s anything but boring...having driven many iterations of this engine. A 650 twin will have more character but would be down in performance to an I4 650cc.
Yeah, its character was lacking. Looked so cool and an extremely well-built bike (of course!), but just no fizz to it at all. And it's not because it's a Japanese I4 -- Kawasakis always seem to have the spice, but Hondas (CBR600RR notwithstanding -- I've not ridden the 1000) seem bland.
But... despite the relatively large displacement, the CB650 wouldn't be a terrible first bike.
