I forget exactly how it's arranged because it's been a few years now, but I got sick of carrying two phones (personal and work), but I wanted to keep my personal # active. So, I called up my personal provider and reduced my plan to the lamest they had ($15/month, talk/text no data) and they were able to set it up to forward all calls and texts to that number to my work number. It's not flawless as sometimes I do miss texts, but it works a good 80% of the time.
One caveat is that I do need to keep that personal SIM card in a phone and turned on.....So I just stuck it in an old phone and have it permanently plugged in at home.

Call you provider, explain the situation and see what they can do.

I might be in that situation soon (work phone), and don't really want to bother with keeping two phones, but also want to keep my personal number which I've had for almost two decades.

I carried two phones for a good 5-6 years, but the damn phones kept getting bigger and bigger! Finally I said f-it and consolidated.

I ditched the two phone system about 12 years ago and have only carried a work phone.  In that time I've switched numbers at least three times.  Its really not as bad as one would think.

I could have gone to using the work phone for personal, but hate the idea of not being 'off the clock'.

Like being able to put the work phone away at the end of the day and not be tempted to check when it pings

Some followup.

I ended up purchasing a sim + plan off Amazon (CA) that gives me access to T-Mobile. Will report back how well it works.

It's looking like I should buy a replacement for my 4.5 year-old Samsung Galaxy S8.

I'm very happy with this phone and I'd like to replace it with another Samsung.  I do not need the latest-and greatest, nor can I afford that.

One replacement candidate.
Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G (new)
https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s21_fe_5g-10954.php

Another.
Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G (like new $399 - according to my carrier)
https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s20_fe_5g-10377.php

Is it possible to use my current sim in the replacement phone or should I buy a new one?

I've got the S22, replaced my S10e, about the same size as the S8 if that means anything to you.

All newer high end phones have a physical SIM card as well as the ability to program a second number via an e-sim. That second number can be permanent so you have two phone lines or can be temporary such as when you are travelling and you need a local number in the country that you are visiting. Most large cell companies in most countries now offer an e-sim number, permanent or temporary. So there is no need to carry two phones around.

I recently got a S22. Very similar to the earlier phones. It replaced a S10 for me. Some reviews complained about battery life but it has been fine so far. The only annoyance is that the physical SD card slot was eliminated.

Yeah, I'm not pleased that they dropped that - used to be so inexpensive to add significant extra storage.  Now you have to pay comparatively big bucks up front if you want more.

Samsung stuff has been pretty good for us, I migrated over after my last BB (Priv - which I loved) and haven't been disappointed. I currently have an S20 FE, work provided, and it's probably 2-3 years old, no issues, and still runs as well as it did new. Mrs.Firm has an S22 I bought for her after xmas, again, no complaints...Though I'll say that the differences vs my old (and much cheaper now) S20 are trivial for most users.

I ordered a Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G in graphite with 128GB of storage.  256GB of storage would have cost $290 more.

With taxes and trade-in, $627.18

I've never used more than 40GB of storage on my S8, so 128GB will be plenty.

If you don't take a lot of pic and download a lot of Netflix, 128GB is fine.  It's a nice phone - enjoy.

I just checked, mine is an S20FE 128GB.  After 2.5 years of ownership, it's about 1/2 full.  It's been an awesome phone, and still is.

Mrs GBA (who also had an S20FE) just upgraded to an S22 Ultra.  Way more phone than she'll ever need, as the S20FE was plenty, but whatever, she coveted it.  I'll stick with my venerable S20FE for a while - it's paid off, and my bill is small, about $35/month.  Hers has ballooned up to $88/mo for the next two years.
