I switched over to Lucky Mobile which runs on the Bell network. For the first 8 months, $30/mo with 5 GB of 3Mbps data on the LTE network and free unlimited 128 kbps data after that, and unlimited Canada wide calling and text. $40/mo after that. With 20 days left in my billing cycle, I still have 3.55 GB left. I know people hate the thought of 3G speeds but I haven't noticed any slowness in day to day use. The plus side is it's on the LTE network capable of 15-60x the speed so I consistently get 3 Mbps no matter the quality of connection.

$0.99 a week for cell service in the North
They basic said we are getting hosed in Southern Canada

Even at 99 cents per week we’re making money, so look at your wireless phone bill and just imagine how much money Rogers, Telus and Bell are making off customers.”

their rates are that cheap because their coverage is tiny...you can have plans like that when you have 1 tower in a small town...but i don't disagree that the big 3 charge a fortune...it's why we switched (back) to Freedom for our wireless services...nowhere near as low cost as Ice, but almost half what Rogers was going to be.

Those plans are voice+text only. Their current voice+text and voice+text+data plans are average.

Their coverage is not great and everywhere outside the territories is roaming, but they do provide a generous amount of roaming data.

I remember going to Yellowknife and having no service. Not even to call a taxi, it was awful.

So a few days before the :censor: hit the fan I decided that if I was going to end up in some form of social quarantine, I'd better have a new toy to pass the time.

Even though I had nearly a year left on my contract with my Galaxy S10 Plus, I caught Apple-weenie fever and decided I just HAD to have the latest and shiniest offering.  I had feared I'd end up in the Upside Down Major thread on some cell phone forum, but with the trade on my old phone and various combinations of promotions on the new one, it was a near push.  Plus my bill went down by $20 a month with better service options.  Hey - at least I wasn't camping out at the mall overnight to be first in line.  ;D

Enter the Galaxy S20 Plus in Cloud Blue, with matching Galaxy Buds Plus.  Pics below are random web pics.

After a couple weeks I am absolutely loving it.  Maybe THE best display on the market and the 120hz refresh rate makes my old phone feel slow (though it never felt that way when using it).

Loving the ear buds as well.  With three sizes available for the tips and ear flange, the fit is ridiculously good.  I can't shake them out even when I really try.  I'm no audiophile but the sound quality is more than good enough for me and that secure fit makes them a good choice when out for a bike ride.  And I can execute all controls with taps on the touch pad or rim of the buds.

And I'm loving having a phone with a bit of colour - I was pretty tired of black.

So did this make any kind of practical sense?  Nope!  My 'old' phone was just fine.  Am I glad I did it?  Yup!

^^ Nice, but you must be upside down on the phone no? :)
I love it when a plan comes together.

Not nearly as much as I expected - the balance owing on the S10 versus its trade value was a near push.  I don't remember the exact numbers but I fully expected to have to shell out a couple hundred bucks and it was more like a couple bucks.  And had I stayed on the old plan for another year at +$20 pr month versus the new plan, I'd be behind.

My S9+ is still going strong.  I buy a new case for it every couple of months to keep it feeling fresh.  I get cases that have a built-in plastic screen protector.  My goal is to keep this phone for a good while longer, so protection is a must.

I'm still happy with our service from PublicMobile.  This billing cycle I dropped my spouse down from a $40, 5GB/month plan to a $25 1.5GB/month plan.  With her being at home now for the forseeable future, there's really no point in paying for data that she's not going to use.  The beauty of PublicMobile is that because it's Pay-As-You-Go and there are no contracts, it was super easy to change her plan out for the next billing cycle.  Just click a few buttons on their website, and it was good to go.

I like the color of that S20.

I wish Apple would offers its top end phones in more colours.

Agreed. Though in fairness the actual top Samsung phone - the S20 Ultra - is available in a rainbow kaleidoscope of black or grey.  ???

I wonder how good this phone would
Has some nice features
https://promo.blackview.hk/bv9900pro/?utm_source=pengchen&utm_medium=FB%20Ads%20bv9900%20pro&utm_campaign=bv9900%20pro

For anyone who doesn't need the features, it's just gimmicks. I am sure it could be handy for some professions, though. I don't think this would be something an average consumer would look at.

BTW, OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are out. Gonna be honest, very meh to me. Not that I would upgrade in under a year, but if I am in the market now and someone told me to look at OnePlus 8/OnePlus 8 Pro I would probably not consider them. The apparent camera hole in screen aside(versus 7 Pro's full screen and pop-up camera), the colours are pretty mediocre IMO, while you can't really go wrong with 7 Pro's 3 colours. I have an Almond 7 Pro and even with a black case on, it's just elegant and stunning. And let's not get started with 8 Pro's pricing...

So many uses for FLIR ,
I have used thermal camera in ‘70’s to check electrical Connections
A small business owner wants to know if some has a temperature entering their Store
Construction / homeowner , it would be great to find cool / hot spots .
You can get FLIR add on to your phone for $400

So, I got a bit of money for my birthday to upgrade from my trusty iPhone 6

I recently got an iPhone 8 plus for work, and although it's bigger than I would like, have been impressed with the camera in comparison. Especially the telephoto lens for close ups

What would you all recommend for an upgrade to the 6?

11 with the extra wide and wide lens, the 11 pro which throws in the telephoto (for a good chunk extra cash), or wait till the fall for the 12?

Thinking of waiting till the fall and see if I can get a discounted 11 pro, as like the tele

Reminded me of a video I watched that says that the near-infrared camera function is disabled in China while it's kinda tucked away in the Camera app in other countries.

The reason is that it's discovered that it can see through plastic and thus, certain clothing... There is a reason you see OnePlus not really talking about the feature all that much.

Yep, I maintain that OnePlus f'ed this one up bad. Tsk tsk...
