Hopefully the LS has better sound insulation. 8 hours in a base model regular cab Sierra of that era was pretty awful.

Most of the those 2WD regular cabs are also base models instead of the nicer LS.

Which motor did it have?

Sadly parted ways with my 32,000 mile Audi 5000 Turbo this week. It refused to start last summer and was still sitting in Alberta. Priorities have certainly shifted for me and it had to go. I’m keeping the sliver 81 5000 turbo though.

The good news is it’s going to get all the attention it needs. The gentleman that bought it owns Continental auto (Benz specialist), Reigel Tuning (Porsche specialist) and Tunerworks out of Calgary. I’m over the moon that I found someone who appreciates this car and give it a good home.

Johnny’s thread about car enthusiasts score had me thinking of my earliest cars. I bought my first at 13. I can remember all that I owned from 13-17 mostly. Mostly in order.

1- 1976 Austin Marina. Didn’t run lol, bought from our neighbour and pushed it home with my friends. 13 yr old me thought I could get it running even with the connecting rod hanging out the side of the block.

2- 1980 Mercury Capri turbo. My first manual and running car. It smoked like crazy though.

3- 1981 Pontiac phoenix. Ran but had a spun bearing.

4- 1979 Datsun 510. Had more rust than car itself.

5- 1977 Pontiac larention 2 door. My first car I legally drove after getting my license the day I turned 16.

6- 1980 Oldsmobile Toronado. Bought after I blew the trans on the Pontiac above.

7- 1979 Cadillac Sedan Deville. Bought off my great uncle. First “nice” car

8- 1980 Audi 5000 S. traded Cadillac for this. Ran only when it wanted to.

9- 1980 Honda Accord 2 dr. Hondamatc car. Ran for a bit.

10- 1979 Malibu. First car I ever did engine work on. Put a bigger hot cam in it and blew the bottom end that same day.

11- 1978 Monte Carlo. Car was near mint. Got it for $300 ad it had a charging problem. Never figured it out. Car was baby blue with a half white padded roof and white vinyl seats/black dash and carpet.

12- 1977 Buick Electra 2 dr. Named it “Gertrude”

13- 1979 Oldsmobile 98 2 dr. Gert the 2nd

14- 1977 Mercury cougar 4 door. Named it “Banacek” because one episode of that show George Peppard drove a similar car in a chase. Nearly froze to death driving it to see my future wife as the heater core was bypassed and it was -30 (she lived in the country about 30 min from Calgary)My best friend still remembers that night lol.

15- 1985 Chevy S10. Loved that truck. Got rear ended and totaled.

16- 1985 Chevy Celebrity Eurosport. Traded for another S10

17- 1982 Chevy S10. Was a really nice truck. Lowered with ground effects. Total 90’s cool. Had the rare 1.9 Isuzu engine. It started knocking a day after I traded for the celebrity.

18- 1977 Mercury Colony Park wagon. This thing sat in the back lane since I was a small boy. The lady that owned it bought it from her dad and eventually bought a newer car. I convinced her to sell it to me even though she had no idea why I wanted it. Was red with wood grain sides. I spent days with rubbing compound to get the shine back. Car was so cool, but the big 460 had a completely blown rear main seal.

19- 1982 Dodge Aries 2.2 4 speed. Another I bought off a neighbour lol. Blew the clutch doing burnouts.

20- 1981 New Yorker. Didn’t own it long but remember it lol.

21- 1987 Plymouth Sundance. Bought off a friend.

22- 1978 Buick Skylark 2 door. Bought and sold it the same week for double. $500! A profit is a profit…

23- 1985 GMC Safari cargo van. We put a couch and a few rocking chairs in it. Had a blast with that van.

See? My family thought I was nuts. Every single car I paid for myself too. Between flyer routes and grass cutting/snow shovelling and family farm work (my Dads side who I didn’t live with) I saved money for cars and mountain bikes (sometimes selling cars to buy bikes and vise versa) My grandpa who was mid 70’s said I owned more cars by 17 than he had his entire life. He’d always give me the gears about it lol.

Funny enough I remember each of my early cars well and several had unique stories. The rusty Datsun 510 in particular became famous with local radio personality Gerry Forbes (not in a good way) when my best friend drove right through his backyard fence one day. That car eventually caught fire going down a main highway through Calgary because we thought it would be cool to add about 2 gallons of extra oil to the crankcase. The amount of smoke was epic while it was running lol.

Like I said. Would be impossible for me to remember every car I owned.

Fascinating run of vehicles!

We had neighbours that went through machines like that, they had a farm with a huge yard and didn't get rid of anything. Everything that broke was scattered where it fell. Fascinating place to wander around in as a kid, as long as you didn't trip and fall into an engine block or something

Profit!?!?! Who said anything about that lol.

Some don’t hurt too bad. In the process of buying a 69 Subaru 360 van right now, that’s a strange one!

So my 15 year old sons been helping a neighbour down the way clean up his yard who had this 89 Camaro RS sitting under a tree since forever. We strike a deal and dragged it over to our place. Not that I wanted another project but figured we couldn’t lose at the $500 we paid for it.

It quit on the owner years ago and he parked it. Was his pride and joy way back and shows 366,000 km on the original 2.8 MPFI V6. He had plenty of enjoyment out of it. I diagnosed it as having a bad fuel pump. Not a big deal in most cars, but in a 3rd gen Camaro it requires dropping the tank….which requires dropping the entire rear diff….definitely not happening. Out came the cutter and a trap door was made in the luggage compartment. The new fuel pump had it roar back to life! It runs far better than I expected it to. Anyway, the young boy is happy and has a decent size project to pick away at. He really digs the T-tops.

Sweet! My brother did sort of the same last year with a Fiero for one of his boys. $500 and a tow out of a neighbors yard. Changed a wheel bearing and it’s been running good ever since

Awesome. If the boy is smart that V6 will meet it's demise and time for a V8 donor build.

Can’t believe that V6 hasn’t already met it’s demise after 366, xxx km. Those weren’t the strongest engine to begin with. I believe Firm has a pile of miles on his V6 Camaro too, guess some go and go.

WOW, nice find and great fix. I imagine a lot of these probably got pushed into a field because of how much work it is to change the fuel pump.

I had an '89 Z24 with the same (maybe similar?) V6 and put an hard 250K+ km on it and it ran great until I got rid of it.

Firm's going to lose his mind! His white '84 Camaro also has just over 300k on it and I'm fairly sure the 2.8.

Very cool story, and I love seeing cars get rescued from abandonment!

Awesome! As long as the floors and rear trailing arms are solid it'll be a great project for him, simple to work on, still easy to get parts cheap, tons of aftermarket support, and it's just a great looking car. I always loved the late 3rd gen RS's with the color matched versions of the 15" z28 wheels, and white works best.

The fuel pump trap door is a super common thing to do. Fortunately (I think) for me, both of my 3rd gen cars are carbureted, so they've got the old mechanical pump mounted on the block....15 minute swap. Those electric in-tank pumps are probably the single most common reason these cars get parked, I think it's a good 4+ hour job to drop the tank and change the pump...Plus a couple hundred for the pump, that was out of budget for a lot of 3rd gen Camaro owners in the early 2000s when the cars themselves were only worth a couple grand.

My 84 has 322K on it now on the original 2bbl 2.8L, the carb hasn't even ever been off the engine. Thing still runs and drives like new...I drove it yesterday for the first time in about six weeks. I think the people who have had bad luck with the 2.8L's either neglect them, beat on them, or both. Maintain it, don't drive it like it's a race car, and it'll run forever.

Only cost us $67 for the pump. Really didn’t take long to install once the trap door was in. Unfortunately, this car is not rust free (body and underside). It really looks much better in photos lol. The drivers floor pan is going to need some work, passenger side is ok. Trailing arms look good though.

We had it on the road yesterday. Shifts good and rides a mite bit smoother than I expected. I bet it’s getting really hard to find clean 3rd gen survivors.

The trap doors makes it an easy job, I'd just be really worried about cutting a little too deep and hitting one of the metal fuel lines that run pretty close to the floor. Steady grinder hand is key  ;D

And yeah, these are either ragged out rotten junk or restored/heavily modded. Not much in between these days...Which is why I hold on to my untouched totally rust free T/A, I don't need it, but I know I'll likely never come across one that clean and original again, at least not without paying eyewatering amount of money for it.

Even in V6 guise, these are very nice cruisers....They ride well, handle very well (journos at the time praised the handling on these, especially in the early 80's), they're comfortable, reasonably practical (rear seats are great for kids....trunk easily handles strollers, groceries, etc) and have all that 80's vibe you could ask for. T-Tops out blaring your favorite tunes, on a warm evening in one of these is a spiritual experience.  :D  There's a reason why a clean IROC, Z28 or T/A runs a 50% premium or so over a comparable C4 Corvette today, even though the C4 is a far superior performance car.

Remember these? Hard to believe it’s 25 years old. Think most dissolved by now. This one is a survivor with zero rust and 137k. It’s really clean, someone really loved it.
