1996 Chevrolet Astro moderate overlap IIHS crash test

Looks like the 2nd and 3rd rows are safe .. considering the 1st row is part of the crumple zone.

Just hop in the back seat before you crash.  :P
Wasn't there a guest on Top Gear that said they did that one time when driving for some kind of ski team?  Saw the accident was going to happen and jumped into the back seat and survived the car crash.  I can't remember the guys name, but he is that guy who did all sorts of endurance race feats, older gentleman.

Still image of what crashing in a Previa looks like.  :o I'll stick with my Mazda 5.
the Mazda 5 didn't do that great either.

2014 Mazda 5
Small Overlap Front - Poor
Moderate Overlap Front - Good
Side - Marginal

The small overlap test didn't come into effect until 2012. All the late 90s and 2000s minivans would've graded poor on the small overlap too. Heck the 2010s minivans were marginal at best on the small overlap. The Pacifica, current gen Odyssey, and all new Sienna score well there.

The Aerostar could even be had in rare 5spd manual form.  8)

There was the Freestar that replaced the Windstar. They were both fwd.

i realize that, but a 2014 Mazda 5 still isn't that great (in that, it's no safety blanket).

Lol at the jalopnik article. Manual Aerostars are rare, but I’ve actually seen quite a few. A manual Astro or safari with the iron duke or a manual turbo caravan or voyager would be far more uncommon.

Wow and I thought I might be the only one with fond memories of an Aerostar! I learned to drive in a 93 XLT AWD extended version. It was unstoppable in the snow!

Me too, many fond memories of road trips taken in ours.  The rear auxiliary heater really put out the heat!  Took this pic just before we disposed of ours in 2007. :'(

sure, but those are also much older (by 10-20 years), and it's not that much better...i don't fault the 5 as it's an older platform too...i'm just saying, the 5 isn't rated that great either, so just be careful out there.

You know it's funny about how vehicles have evolved and become safer.  It seemed like the industry really coasted there for about a decade before the safety testing introduced that small overlap rating.  Then all of the industry upped their game and now everything is pretty safe.  I wouldn't worry too much about any vehicle made in the last 10+ years.  Didn't Volvo say something like their vehicles won't have any deaths by 2025 or something crazy.

Yeah, my Dad had 2 Safari's, followed by a Montana... got into a crash with his Odyssey in the end, but lived  :rofl2:

He loved the Safari's, especially the last one which was a 1996 I believe? That thing racked up the miles, Florida a few times, Tennessee once and then he gave it to my brother-in-law when he got the Montana in 2002 I think. My brother-in-law used it as his work vehicle (drywall taper) until it finally was beyond repair with rusted out rockers and a knock in the engine... though I think that was maybe 2012 when he got his Ram to replace it.

That's a big claim to make.  What if a cement truck falls on one of their cars?  Or it gets pinned between two semi trucks crashing into each other at 120km/hr.

It was actually by 2020, they made the claim in 2008... but have since backed down from that.
