The transmissions were a common failure point on them, and I remember a family friend of ours having to put 2 transmissions into theirs.

Not sure if my buddy had an old Aerostar or Windstar, but I'll always remember him calling me up 'Hey, can you pick me up from Spirit River' (next town over)

He'd driven it the 6 hrs to Edmonton, and on the way back it blew it's transmission all over the highway, right in the middle of nowhere

He coasted to the side of the road, called up a wrecker in Fox Creek who bought it sight unseen, then flagged down a semi and caught a ride that brought him almost all the way home

Thought that was very ingenious
Aerostar was RWD, Windstar was FWD...Aerostar was also quite boxy shaped...the Windstar replaced the Aerostar.

Aerostar was also available with AWD like the Astro/Safari twins. We had the AWD version. I think it was a full-time system and was quite effective. Never had issues with it or the transmission.

Aerostars we’re actually pretty solid. Built off the ranger frame. My grandad had a loaded 92 Eddie Bauer version with the 4.0 AWD. Constant front end parts wearing out and they had such ridiculously small tires (14”....seriously) for the size of the vehicle. Most of them rotted away too. I haven’t seen an Aerostar in a long time.

yea, my buddy had an Aerostar Sport back in the day...it was used when he bought it (maybe 5 years old), but wasn't overly expensive...it was black with a factory ground effects body kit on it.

looked like this:

great for hauling the kids and his hockey gear around...he had a few years before moving on to something else.

^These were called "Aerosport" and that version was all that was left at the end of the model run, mostly in extended versions. Ford was clearing them out at stupid prices, 16 995$ IIRC. Rented them often for university spring breaks. Being a bunch of car nerds, we organized tours of car factories around Detroit / Windsor or aeronautics in the Boston area, depending on the year. These vans were pretty comfy at speed on the highway.

The Aerostar could even be had in rare 5spd manual form.  8)

There was the Freestar that replaced the Windstar. They were both fwd.

Dad had a 91 Aerostar Extended in the mid 90s. Still the most comfortable road trip vehicle to this day, 4 captains chairs, separate AC and heat in the back, tons of storage, and the 4 leaker made decent enough power to get my dad somewhere near 170km/h back when Montana had its "reasonable and prudent" speed limits. That thing could lay down one tire fire with the best of them!! Looked a lot like this but he had different hubcaps

Lighten up Francis.....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was on the Ranger/Exploder platform?

Sort of. Ranger = body on frame. Aerostar = unibody. It was still beefy with welded in frame rails. Kinda of like a Jeep Cherokee.

The front suspension was also different. Ranger had twin I-beams, Aerostar was a-arms and coil springs. Rear end was more like a scaled down Crown Vic. The engines were often shared with the Ranger. One could even order a 2.3L four in the early days!

Pre-dated the Explorer.

Wow and I thought I might be the only one with fond memories of an Aerostar! I learned to drive in a 93 XLT AWD extended version. It was unstoppable in the snow!

Ooohhhh, fancy, awd. My dad regretted only buying the RWD as the part of Calgary we lived in was a huge PITA for him to get out of during the winter.

I also did much of my first driving years behind the wheel of a 1992 AWD Aerostar. Remember that thing being a beast in the snow and was always fun to drift sideways. I met my future wife at 17, her folks had a 1993 Astro AWD with the luxury seating. She got to drive it often. I remember we raced the Aeroslug VS Astro every chance we got, the Astro would always destroy the Ford.  We once had my friend Billy's parents' 1990 Grand Caravan, girlfriends parents Astro, my grandads Aerostar, another two buddies with their parents Mercury Villager and Lumina APV all out cruising one night. We raced each van and the 3.8 powered Lumina was the quickest. Billy's poor Mitsubishi V6 powered Caravan held up the rear and wound itself up in the dealership service dept the next week with tranny troubles lol. Exciting times being a 90's kid during the height of minivan popularity. ;D

I’d LOVE to find that exact van in good shape. I preferred the pre facelift Astro/Safaris. I had a Lumina APV for several years too. Loved the modular seating and cool feeling of driving behind 4ft of dashboard. Wife hit a approach on a gravel road doing about 80, pushed the left wheel almost through the drivers side floorboard. She and baby didn’t get hurt but the poor Lumina had to be put to pasture.

The Aerostar and Astro/Safari were super comfortable vans for road trips.

I remember our family Aerostar going on loads of road trips. The rear climate and audio controls were a pretty big deal back then!

My family rented a white Chevy Astro in the mid 90s and drove it, from Saskatoon to Toronto, on the Trans Canada. They absolutely hated it due to its ponderous sloppy handling on the twisty Northern Ontario roads. I don't remember the drive much as a kid - I was just sleeping the entire time.  ;D I do remember it having two gas tanks though!!
