I had a 2002 P5 in dark blue. It was a very eager car that handled amazingly! Excellent steering and suspension. Definitely a budget driver's car compared to the competition.

I still miss my P5. Had it for 4 years and 150,000 kms. Car was a lot of fun and I drove it to California where I did some awesome mountain switchback driving.

Remember when the Mazda3 came out so I went for a test drive and hated it. Everything was so much softer and relaxed. No wonder it sold better.

The steering on the P5 was so much better than the 3. I too was really disappointed when I first drove a 3.

Amazing amount of love for the P5's! I never realized they were such an enthusiast car. I do enjoy driving this one, nice and responsive, only thing I hate is the noise, road and engine roar as it's turning 3600 rpm at 120 km/h.

We had a dark blue one as well for a while. Got it for cheap since the rear quarters had started to rust. My wife really loved the P5 and told me if I bought her one she'd learn how to drive manual.  ;D

It's too bad there was never a proper sports version of that generation Protegé, particularly the 5 variant. The MazdaSpeed was just cobbled together with aftermarket parts, and the MP3 before that only had a very mild power bump. The handling of that car was insane, and the P5s had crazy good resale values too.I remember looking at four year old ones and they were $15k minimum, for a car that was $22k new.

my buddy had a P5 as well (2000ish model?)...had it until they bought a new minivan around 2014ish...car ran great, but it reached that point where it was time to let it go (lot of rust and many other parts needed replacement - due to age).

P5s were only sold for two years. 2002 & 2003.

probably an 02 then (he had it quite some time before replacing it)...overall, it was a pretty good car...rust was the main issue which seemed to affect most of them from that era.

So, any of ex P5 owners frequent the TOPRETEGE forums?

Btw, though the Mazdaspeed Protege was very competitive in the class, I always wished Mazda would have given it a proper engine. Mazdaspeed 3 engine would have been awesome on the MSP. Plus better rust inhibition...

I was on there for a while.  At that time Mazda had a pretty active online community. Not sure where they're at now.

Sold mine after it started to rust as well.

Funny enough there are 0 for sale in Ontario on AutoTrader.

I bet there's a few in Vancouver.

Mine made it to 225k km before I got rid of it. It needed a bunch of maintenance and it just wasn't worth it because rust.

A friend of mine bought one in Calgary close to 10 years ago. He still has it and I believe it has over 300k these days.

Those Protege5s were actually quite a bit of fun to drive, and quite handsome for their time, too. Shame they came from the factory with rusty fenders...

A few years ago a dealer in Nova Scotia had a 2003 with < 100k on it in perfect condition. One owner trade in. It was even the rare model that had leather (offered only in '03). I really should have bought it.

Yes. Yes you should have.

One small detail I loved about the P5 is that a set of golf clubs fit across the back without having to remove anything.  The same is not true of the Golf Wagon or The Mazda5.

Well the P5 went to a good home. A friend's kid needed a decent car and he's now the proud owner.

To compensate for the space the Mazda left, I "rescued" this 1978 Malibu from the garage its been in since 1993. Like a madman, I slapped a battery in it, checked the fluids, and drove the 110 km highway trip home in -19. We made it! This car is as old as I am, sure doesn't seem like this style was that long ago, 78 was the first year of this small Malibu (these were the cars that rear windows did not open) and they built the Malibu until 1983, the Olds version lived the longest, 1988 was it's last year. Certainly a simple car, it's only options being dual sport mirrors, AM radio, rear defog, and a tilt wheel. It's powered by a small block 305.
