in the early '90s, we had (1) GMC Safari and few Chevy S10 pick-up as service vehicles. Cruising long distance while carrying a lot of material, the Safari was definitely more comfy but IIRC, took a toll on gas doing so...
Gone but not forgotten in chronological order: 2019 Volt, 2013 Volt, 2014 Spark EV, 2012 Volt and many others before...

Chevy Astro is maybe the worst-driving vehicle I've ever had the displeasure of driving.  :P

I've worked for a few companies that had them as company vehicles, and they were all just terrible to drive. It's a real shame, as the idea was so good: all the space of a minivan, beefy construction for rough roads, decent payload, and AWD.

I'm generally not that fussy: if I'm getting paid to go for a drive, I can still enjoy myself in a pickup, or a 1-ton van, or even an old Chevy Cruze. But when the boss tossed me the keys and said "Take the Astro..." I always just thought Ugghh... going to be earning my pay today.  :P

They did drive pretty badly lol. I actually recently sold a 2005 (last year they were built) for a friend. She handed me a stack of receipts for brand new front end, brakes, tires, gaskets, tune up, close to $6000 in total in the past two years. It drove much like I remembered them, loose steering, cramped foot wells, noisy, rougher ride. It sold almost immediately for $4500 (I asked $5000) Van had 300,000km on it too. Think I had 10 Facebook messages the first night. New owners planed on turning it into a camper, popular thing to do here in BC and they really love the Astro and Safari.

^^At the time, the Safari/Astro had the poorest performance crash safety of any car offered for sale as tested by IIHS ("Poor") and NHTSA (2-3 stars).

Yup, they sure did poorly, but lots of others were just as bad.

The director of the IIHS sold his Toyota Previa after it was crash tested, and he saw how poorly it performed.

I didn't think anyone did worse in the final few years it was offered. (low/mid 2000s)

Geeez, that transport van was bad! Another really bad one was the 97-03 F150’s, they folded like cheap green tents.

The Previa performed fairly poor as well.

Too bad, I found this for sale. Really need a good interior clean among other things. No A/C.

It did.

But was replaced by the Sienna in 1998(?) whereas in 2005, the GMC was still on the market.  And still terrible.

Looks like the 2nd and 3rd rows are safe .. considering the 1st row is part of the crumple zone.

Well GM had the Chevy Venture in 1997. Oh wait. :rofl2:

Sienna and Windstar fared much better.
