There was an accident but that is another thread.

Anyways last night after I got home it would refuse to shift into Reverse which was bothersome.

However this morning the errors magically went away and it drives fine. ???

Take it to the Acura Dealer and get the tranny reflashed.  2017 MDXs still had ZF electronic issues.

Brakes not a strong point in that series MDX.

Ir's only money and drink more beer.

OK but shouldn't this be a new thread?  Perhaps in "Moan and Whine"?  ;D

Ouch the 9 speed. Same issue plaguing the V6 RDX

RDX never got the ZF 9-speed, only the 6-speed, before going to their own 10-speed unit in the current gen.

I stand corrected. I know when I was shopping V6 RDX's for the inlaws that they had transmission issues, just assumed it was the notorious 9 speed)  It's too bad for Acura, just as they  ditched the thirsty blown four and gained the silky six they hobbled it with the janky tranny.

No idea, but I would be getting the latest reflash.  Mechanically it's a good transmission.  It will probably run you $200.  One simple tranny drain and fill while you are at it.

And another thing.  Those rear diffs have a service interval.  Acura want those drained at the first 20,000 km.  If you have 100K km on it now I'd do that too unless you are dealing it in.

Ok I’ll talk to the dealer.

Car drives fine this morning.

The diff fluid got changed at some point yeah. Years ago. Never came back up. Maybe worth doing again too.

Not sure what we will do with it but if the trans fluid and reflash go well then might keep.

From what I have read, Honda sourced the ZF 9 speed directly from them. Chrysler made them in-house under an agreement with ZF. I think Honda did not have enough capacity for manufacturing their new 10 speed, so they went to ZF to supply them with transmissions. It is why you see some models available with both the ZF 9-speed and Honda's 10-speed.

Lots of issues with the Honda 6-speed, especially on the 2016+ Pilot and Ridgeline. Family friend of ours had their transmission pack it in on their 2018 Ridgeline with only 80k. The ZF should be solid once the updates are done to it and it is maintained to schedule. The fluid changes are expensive though because of the cost of the fluid.

The first one is indeed 20K.  I stupidly did it and the stuff that was coming out was no different than the fluid coming out.  If Honda wants those diffs changed at 20K km then they should pick up the tab.  Not doing it again.  2022 will be gone @ around 60k km. Subsequent owner can do it.  No rear hitch so WTF.

^ Same experience here with our 2014. Fluid looks new when draining out. Seems like such a waste, but I’ve still been following the maintenance minder.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

I am wondering if the early change called for in the rear diff is to get out any possible debris from break-in?

Seems to be a Honda thing. On our 2002 CRV the rear axle change intervals were also pretty short, in that case something to do with the limited slip clutch packs.

From what I remember the fluid was very thin, looked like ATF. If you ignored it long enough the axle would chatter going around corners

Same here (fluid looks good)  but I have the change procedure down to an art so it's about 15 mins. If you are draining dark gunk then that would not be a good sign either.

So summary on Honda transmissions. Early Honda 5 speeds (Odessey)  and the 6 speeds were not good. The 9 speed ZF was mostly bad programming, the 10 speed Honda is OK?

What's wrong with the 6 speeds?

Honda struggled with judder from the torque converters and clutches wearing out. They released a few TSBs for reprogramming etc but there were still reports of early transmission failure. 2012 forward.

I test drove a 2015? RDX last fall and it was immediately noticeable. The dealer acknowledged it was probably replacement time.

That's is worth checking for sure

The RX gives some oddball warnings when the battery is low, usually about the brakes

My Pilot was doing something similar...I was getting "brake system failure/error" notification (don't remember the exact wording) via the little envelope with an exclamation mark on it, on the infotainment screen.  Then the battery gave up.
