Our dryer just kicked the bucket and damn near became a house fire.  I’ve replaced the belt and bearings twice to keep it going but this time the coil/elements were broken off in the back and set a small amount of lint on fire.  Luckily my wife was right there when it happened.  It’s just over 10 years old so I guess that’s about as much as you can expect.

Of course this coincides with my wife leaving for NL for two weeks on Friday.  Before people ask, no I am not going to attempt to repair this.  If an appliance starts shooting flames, it’s time to retire it, all trust has been lost.

Ya best to turf it.

That's not much life out of a dryer, considering you don't have kids.  I sold our last Maytag a year ago, it was just shy of 20 years old.  Never touched it with regards to repairs and it worked like new.  We replaced the washer and thought the dryer can't have much left in it so I sold it for a 2-4 of beer.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Oh the dryer before that was a solid 15+ years old.  I just think they don’t make them like they used to.  Checked out prices online and going with the cheapest one I found, $499 at The Brick, if it lasts the same 10 years no big deal.

No kids that’s for sure but two short hair dogs and the bulk of the lint is loaded with their fur.

Could replace the element, not too hard. Ours did something similar, but not as drastic, I took it apart & repaired the element myself.

Insurance finally gave us a payout offer for the Pilot (well over a month).   Two of the vehicles they used to compare prices to don't have a safety, one is advertised as *AS IS*YOU CERTIFY*YOU SAVE*

Still no reply from insurance (Economical Mutual if anyone is interested) about the $500 deductible they applied, which they know better about...or the value of my vehicle vs an AS IS special.

Typical, I'd be looking at ads on the other end of the spectrum to send them and help even out the price offer.

They compared four vehicle prices, but only two of them are safetied, which in Ontario is only good for 36 days.   Who knows how much it would cost to get the other two safetied, so I just want them out of the calculation and I'd be ok.

Yeah that a good idea, sending Autotrader adds.

Our fridge started to pack it in, no fire this time, just started to leak and it smells like freon. Besides the cost of new appliances, there are such few options for counter depth fridges, like do people like their fridges to stick out?!?!?!

Exactly, nothing like paying as much, or more, for less fridge. But we just don't have the space for one that sticks out.

Broken fridges suck so bad

I was sorting out a fridge that was leaking water on the floor last week for the stepdaughter. Did figure out a fix and got it done but was terrified of breaking something and having to suddenly deal with a bunch of expensive food slowly warming up

Its really the only appliance in the house that you can't do without, well, without some serious planning and headaches. My parents fridge gave out while they were away for the weekend, thousands of dollars of food gone and it took them almost two weeks to get one. Ours is on death watch, but we get the new one on Tuesday.

Actually, when we defrost our deep-freeze in the basement once a year, I wait until we have a night that's going to be guaranteed cold (like -20), and I put all the food in baskets and lock it in the car overnight.
