I was a lifelong TD customer, but when I started dealing more in the US their cross-border options were really weak compared to RBC, who had much more robust options, which was surprising because TD operates branches in the US and RBC doesn't. TD Canada & TD USA are very poorly integrated though, big miss IMO.
RBC has banks in the USA too.

Though unsure about your state.

Not anymore, RBC pulled their US branches awhile back, there's nothing flying an RBC banner in the US anymore. Apparently they've got some affiliation with City National, but that's a small regional player somewhere (<100 branches)

I didn’t realize that.  I opened a checking and credit card with RBC US last year and had spoken with their cross border team about the process if I wanted to purchase a property in the US.  From my understanding they’re able to get you a US mortgage based on your Canadian credit.  So far they’ve been amazing to deal with.

They can get you a US mortgage based on Canadian Credit, and they still have a US based office (Georgia I think), which is really decent to deal with. I started down that path when we bought our current place, but in my scenario it made more sense to just buy the property outright, so I never went through with the mortgage.

Man, that is the dream.  Congrats to you and your family on that.  Never worrying about mortgage rates again is priceless, not to mention freeing up a lot of cash flow.  I'll be joining you shortly  ;D

Thanks :) I'd mentioned it here before, but the feat wasn't buying the current place, it was paying off our Mississauga house...Once we were mortgage free on that, free'd up the cashflow for Mrs.Firm to stay home and take care of the kids. Sold that house for significantly more than we paid for our current house down here in TN, so it just made sense to use some of the cash to pay for the new place. That said, transferring all that cash into the US, and coordinating the timing of the real estate deals made for a stressful couple weeks - RBC did really come through for me there.

Yep, having our dollar bumping around .72-.73 USD makes for some pretty grim costs to buy US dollars.

Oh for the days of the Canadian petro dollar.  ;D

Heading down at the end of the month - dreading that conversion.

I've heard Knightsbridge is pretty good, haven't used them myself though. Most of the big Canadian banks will give you a decent rate if you're transferring enough, I am not sure what the thresholds are off hand though.

I agree if your doing big amounts  the banks can be decent,  but not on typical amounts you would take out for a weeks travel.. one of my buddies is retired  from RBC  and Continental is a better rate than his staff rate on seniors day

I'm small potatoes.  I bought only $200 USD.
