I had a hilarious snowflake encounter this morning that left me kind of annoyed. Little backstory first, a guy at a machine shop, we've been using for years, and I had built up a good a good rapport and tomorrow is his last day as him and his wife are moving to Saskatoon, wanted to take him out for breakfast. Went there and they had a new receptionist/front counter girl:
Me- "good morning, I am here to see Wayne"
Her-"sorry, I'm new here, who is that??"
Me-" tall black guy"
She got this look on his face like I just called her grandmother the town bicycle and disappeared into the back. Wayne comes out a minute later trying to keep from laughing, grabs me by the arm and drags me outside and starts to try to tell me something but is laughing too hard.
Me- "What the hell is so funny?!?!"
Him- "new girl...came in the back and with a very serious tone just told me that you called me the "B" word hahahahahahha"
Me- "...."B" word....what the hell does that mean...."
Him- "You asked for Wayne, the tall black guy, "B" word"
Me- "was that wrong, I'm sorry if I offended you"
Him-"dude, I'm black and I'm tall....you described me to a tee"
We laughed about it for a while, had a smoke, he didn't have time to go for breakfast, we said our goodbyes and on the drive back to work I was thinking about it, had I really said something offensive?!?! Are we getting to the point that describing someone skin tone is offensive??
