AirB, is that kind of a gong show common?  Because that's ridiculous.

And Quad, totally. Patty McIrish's type places are the worst.  They try so hard to accomplish nothing.  But I suppose it means the seats are full on St. Paddy's day. And don't get me started on that one.

My suburb has retimed the traffic lights for even more aggressive "traffic calming."  It now takes 20 min (in non-rush traffic) of stop and go and creep to make the 6.5km trip north to south across the small city.  During peak times that time can be even longer.

It's come to the point where it's faster to drive into Edmonton to shop, despite distances being 2-5x farther.

So stupid.  So frustrating.  Such a waste of fuel and emissions.  The RCMP have convinced our city council that basically bringing traffic to a standstill is the only traffic safety strategy worth considering.

I cringe whenever I see the term "traffic calming".   Remember when the job of traffic engineers was to improve the efficient flow of traffic?

Wait, so they retimed the stoplights to force drivers to drive more slowly & stop more frequently?

Replacing lights and stopsigns and speed bumps with roundabouts is welcome and effective. But slowing traffic down by timing the lights to make everyone drive 50km/h isn't.

Yup.  They've done this several times over the last 10 years.  The main road through the city used to an 80 zone with the lights timed to allow steady north/south (and south/north of course) flow.  Now the speed limit is down to 60 and the lights have been retimed several times to cause traffic to slow.  I think it's now "optimum" for traffic interruption as you pretty much stop and sit at every intersection.

Traffic management here is ludicrous.   The city installed red light cameras and found that we didn't have a red-light running issue.  Upset at the lack of ticket revenue they drastically reduced the amber light phase time to create red light runners.  If you're new to the city, you'd be surprised at seeing everyone creep up to lights that are still green  - because they know if the light changes you need to ABS panic stop to avoid a SERIOUS ticket - they start at something over $500.

If you're lucky enough to come to light that's green, that is.  And if you do, you better creep through the intersection because our intersections also have "speed on green" cameras.  Going 66 in the 60 through the intersection?  Big fine in the mail!!

Edmonton is only slightly better.  They are just as draconian about speeding.  Edmonton writes over 600,000 speeding tickets a year - about 10x more than cities the same same size.  All that enforcement and our collision rates are about the same as other places.   ::)

Hmmmm note to self......don't visit Edmonton.

I like the traffic timing in NC, mostly programmed thru some complex algorithm of time-of-day and inductive sensors. It is slightly annoying that they put up a few extra lights on the highway on my way to work- they're timed so that if you drive "normally" (at posted limit of 70), you'll end up stopping at all 3 lights if there's vehicles in the queue. But if I accelerate briskly up to 90.......I beat all 3 of them.

Not that I do this, of course. Just hypothetical.  :shuffle:

I am all for proper roundabouts A different story when the city of winnipeg installs these pimples at old 4 way intersections and calls it a traffic calming circle.

Still better than having a 4 way stop sign. Simply yield priority to the right with those small roundabouts.

I think it's to right for vehicles NOT in circle, ie the same rules you have for  4 way stops.

We should get Blueprint's thoughts on this. I've noticed using stop lights to intentionally slow traffic lately too.

Realistically if they want to slow traffic down they should change road design. But if the motivation is pedestrians, or cycling THEY SHOUD IMPROVE THOSE FACILITIES AT THE SAME TIME NOT JUST SLOW DOWN TRAFFIC FOR FUN.

In a few places in Quebec I've seen "feux synchronisés" signs with a speed - now THAT is a good way to slow traffic to a speed you want. While not having the same emissions issues with stop and start.

Hmmm I've never really had a confusion with that, but then again, I haven't been in a situation where there's 4 vehicles at a small intersection/retrofit roundabout like that. Most roundabouts where I've driven have a yield sign for entering traffic so it is defined that traffic already in the roundabout have priority.
