Our fridge started to pack it in, no fire this time, just started to leak and it smells like freon. Besides the cost of new appliances, there are such few options for counter depth fridges, like do people like their fridges to stick out?!?!?!

Counter Depth! Less for more! I feel your pain I only had a couple choices..

Exactly, nothing like paying as much, or more, for less fridge. But we just don't have the space for one that sticks out.

What’s behind the fridge? I stole 6” from our mechanical room to make a bump-out for the fridge. Now a full-depth fridge sits flush with the counter. Best of both worlds.

I would love to do that if it was an option, unfortunately its the staircase going to the basement.

soon enough you'll be able to let mother nature be your "walk-in" fridge  :rofl2:

Actually, when we defrost our deep-freeze in the basement once a year, I wait until we have a night that's going to be guaranteed cold (like -20), and I put all the food in baskets and lock it in the car overnight.

Thanks just smart.

Running errands in the winter is easier too as you can keep perishable groceries in the car for longer without worrying about spoilage.

I get home from a week away, both garage door keypads are not working, batteries are fine, but both have lost programming to the openers. I've never had that happen before, how does that even happen? Course, these are newer openers that came with the house, I don't have manuals for them, both units are the same but the keypads are different brands for some reason. Took an hour of dickering around to get them both programmed and working again....Total waste of time.

Insurance finally gave us a payout offer for the Pilot (well over a month).   Two of the vehicles they used to compare prices to don't have a safety, one is advertised as *AS IS*YOU CERTIFY*YOU SAVE*

Still no reply from insurance (Economical Mutual if anyone is interested) about the $500 deductible they applied, which they know better about...or the value of my vehicle vs an AS IS special.
Typical, I'd be looking at ads on the other end of the spectrum to send them and help even out the price offer.

They compared four vehicle prices, but only two of them are safetied, which in Ontario is only good for 36 days.   Who knows how much it would cost to get the other two safetied, so I just want them out of the calculation and I'd be ok.

Now they want receipts of all the work I've done on the Pilot for the last year, even though I only owned it for about 3 weeks before it was wrecked....and they know that.   I just want them to evaluate it as a vehicle with an Ontario safety vs one that is sold "As is".
My broker is writing them another email on my behalf, just got off the phone with him.  (I have 6 vehicles and a house insured with them, he's worried)

Ostensibly, if you only owned it for three weeks then shouldn't you be able to make the case that it's worth what you paid for it?

My sister had issues with her insurance when her car was totaled.  It took a year and a half to get the money.  That was in Ottawa.

That's basically all I want, my purchase cost plus cost to safety it, which was only $150.    They don't care about purchase cost though, only comparisons.
They at least finally acknowledged I was not at fault and dropped the deductible, now I'll send them the bill for the week of rental they wouldn't previously approve.

Insurance, we are here to take your money but don't ask us for anything if you need help.

Just horrible service and shouldn't be allowed. Only if they could be charged with something but this just another big company giving you the middle finger making you fight for what is yours.

Sounds like you are able to financially weather through the storm but imagine people who can't.

My daughter bought a BMW certified  low mileage X3 and wrote it off after 7 weeks. They tried to screw her saying she had overpaid and offered her thousands less.

Discussed here.....https://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php?topic=108017.0   We argued and offered proof of market values but in the end took a 3K hit. My agent told me her insurer (Royal Sun Alliance) had been bought by Intact a few months earlier and Intact has a terrible reputation of when it comes to paying claims. I was told the first thing they do when they buy a company is go in and say they want to see a 10% reduction in the dollar amount of payouts.  ::)

I hate insurance companies almost as much as cell phone companies and banks.

I just sent an email accepting their new offer which was $500 more than before.  That was all I wanted, basically what I had into the Pilot.

I've had a few discussions about what would people do if they didn't have the means to weather the storm.  You'd be screwed and stranded.
I couldn't even find a rental in NB I could tow my trailer home with and leave in Ontario, basically had to buy a vehicle before I got a payout, had to finance my own rental, etc., plus we had just bought the Pilot outright in August, so had little spare cash laying around.   The Touareg came to more than the Pilot, didn't finance it either.

BTW, I did have several offers from friends to drive down and haul us all back if needed, it's good to have good friends.

Yeah, you're lucky that you had the means to get by, but a lot of people don't. They'd be stuck there, or having to take out a loan to just get thru it all. Hope that this settlement helps bring a bit of closure for you, and you can get on with healing both physically & mentally.

Not sure how irritated I am yet....This could work in my favor, or be proper annoyance. I was out in Vegas for AAPEX/SEMA for 4 days, Mrs.Firm was on the phone complaining about how the upright freezer in the garage, which we bought 8 months ago at Costco wasn't cooling properly. I figured someone had left the door open or something and iced it up....So, I get home and start checking it out. No icing, compressor seems to be running, and the bottom two shelves are still frozen up stuff up top is getting soft. I tossed a thermometer in there to confirm, and sure enough, the top shelf was running around 35F.

It's a cheapo brand, Galanz, I Googled it and it seemed to be a common issue with these units, and some people were replacing the evaporator fan with an Amazon replacement to get it cooling properly again. So, I called the manufacture, who offered to send a technician, or issue a refund....Refund please! So, we'll see if it shows up....

Then, I went down and cleaned it out, removed the inner panel to access the evaporator fan, removed it, tested it to confirm it's bad and ordered the Amazon replacement for $20.

So, if the Amazon replacement works, then I am up about $350 bucks, plus still have a working freezer. If it doesn't then I've wasted a bunch of time, $20, and still need to go shop for a new freezer.

This appears to have worked out in my favor....$20 Amazon fan arrived, swapped the connectors and installed it, and I can now hear the fan running properly. Gunna give it a couple hours and check the temps, but I think we're good - and up about $350!
