Ultra-practical...headlights suck! Big time.

I never really noticed what good headlights add until the first day I drove the 335 at night...wow
I love it when a plan comes together.

My brother didn't like the Odyssey and went with a Sienna instead.  Notably, the lack of AWD was a non-starter for him.

...that said, even though the Sienna sits marginally higher, they bottom out the front end a lot.  I think minivans need to perhaps have a better approach angle rather than being lifted.

Headlights are great in the touring model, FWIW.

And regarding transmission issues, I am willing to bet it has more to do with the 5 speed transmissions that were in the 2011-2013 non-Touring models versus the 6 speed in the 2011-2013 Touring models and 2014+ models.

I've had mine for 2.5 years now, 43k kms and the only issues I have had are as follows:

1. The driver's side sun visor fell down in my lap the first time I went to use it.  Likely damaged during the dealer installed Honda Remote Start.
2. The proximity key door handles have died on 3 of the doors.  I can grab the door handle and it won't unlock.  I'll be taking it in.  Just about every time I am about to take it in, one or two of the three bad ones randomly work.  Lol.  So I may be making several trips to have them all replaced.

Other than that, it's been a solid van.  Comfortable on long distances, roomy and decent on fuel.

The Sienna interior was gross until the 2015 upgrades.  2017 Sienna has some nice mechanical upgrades with the 2GR-FSE now installed (3.5L V6 with D4S direct and port injection) with 296hp and 263lbft, along with an 8 speed transmission.  According to the EPA, these changes now allow the Sienna 2WD to match the Odyssey (6 speed transmission, but variable engine displacement) for fuel economy.  The AWD Sienna still has a 1 mpg penalty in city and 3 mpg penalty on the highway.

That said, Honda needs to up their game with the all-new forthcoming 2017 model.

That would be infuriating. Especially with kids. At least you have the remote power door thing though.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.
That makes me feel angry!

For the most part I don't think the transmission is an Odyssey weakness anymore.  The 05 I had well over 230k when I sold it.  That was the gen after the issue that plagued Accords, Odyssey, and other models.

So the issue described in the article, like mentioned, is probably an easy fix.

I wonder how well the cylinder deactivation will be after 250k.

I also wonder if Honda will use the 6 speed tranny on lower trims and the new 9 speed on the Touring trim for the upcoming new gen.  Another reason not to get the Touring, IMO....

Honda had some initial issues with cylinder deactivation years ago.  Most of it was a software fix.  I've seen many 3rd gen Odyssey EX-Ls and Tourings with the system pushing past 250k kms.

Yeah, that new ZF 9 speed is junk.  But Honda is working on its own 10 speed and 11 speed triple clutch transmission.

^ Well hopefully those 3rd gen that have gone past 250k, didn't have any issues with the cylinder deactivation.  Little surprised that Honda is developing 10 & 11 speed transmissions.  With the CVT in their lineup now, why not just add them to the Odyssey? If Nissan can do it with the Pathfinder, surely it could work in the Odyssey.

Also regarding 10 speed transmissions, I seem to remember GM & Ford working on one, haven't heard any news in a while...

The CVT in Honda's portfolio cannot handle the higher torque output of the V6s.

Nissan has 2 different CVTs, of which one is capable of handling higher torque output.

I suspected as much.  But just thought, since they were already doing CVT, they make another one.  But I guess people wouldn't want one a CVT in the Ridgeline...

Test driving the MDX, the 2017 felt largely fine transmission wise but a 2016 model felt weird.  I could cause it to get "confused". There were a series of software updates recently I believe.
