Thanks guys. Was a very stressful and demanding week so I took Friday afternoon off for "automotive therapy". Hand-washed and waxed the Mercedes, and detailed the interior. It just came back from three weeks at the shop (because FGCs eat head gaskets...) and it was filthy. Then I was feeling up to more, so I did the S2000 too.

Car looks fantastic man!   8).   What's with this head gasket issue?  First I've heard of that.  Is it really that common?  Expensive?  Not being nosey, but looking at a 86 560 SL for myself, so need to know this stuff.   ;D.

The s2000 is a breeze when it comes to detailing.  Nice clean lines and devoid of cladding.  Can't say I'm a fan of Honda paint though.  :-\

Thanks! It had an external head gasket oil leak. While it was torn apart, did a bunch of other things too (valve stem seals, valve cover gaskets, timing chain guides, etc.). Wasn't cheap, but keep in mind this car has almost 325,000km on it. This kind of stuff is expected to go and/or preventative maintenance.

M117 V-8 is a great engine, but it does require service.  Glad you had the timing chain guides done - and the rest of that stuff, now that engine is probably good for the rest of the life of the car.

What would a clean 1987 560SEC be worth? Been offered to me fairly cheap, it a west coast car so the body is great. Its all the real wood trimming inside that needs help.

$10k at least. I've seen them fetch more on BAT. I missed out on a great one 2yrs ago for $6,500.

Really? Didn't think they were worth so much.  A good friend has it, had it for 10+ years and basically sits unused. Frankly I was scared of it as my knowledge on old Benzes is practically zero (had a 86 300SD once) Might be worth putting some effort into.....Thanks

560SELs can be had for as little as $2500, but it will need a LOT of TLC.  I've seen some pretty decent examples for $7000 or so, but they still needed to have stuff done to get them really up to snuff.  Values vary widely thanks to the variety of condition/etc.

So, a good clean car that has been brought right up to tip-top condition is going to be a $10k+ car.

I can have it for 5K. It's dark grey, I don't know the miles though.
