Quiet inside and more comfortable to drive...what's not to like in the Tucson here. I have no idea what is meant by the notion that the Hyundai is not as fast as the Ford. They are the same speed ...they all are...and that is plenty fast enough for all and probably all hairy at 'full out' if the police are on strike sometime. The Fords rear folded seats are fairly flat...nice...but the Tucson's rear folded seats are not shown for some reason. This aspect can be a deal maker/breaker for some and so can the Tow rating (not mentioned) they should have some...for small tent trailers or visits to Home Whatsit..at least. Even if you are never going to tow anything, a T.R. should be included in a spec, if only for resale purposes. The similar Nissan is nice enough but ruled out for us because towing is 'Not recommended'.
I think you have to look fairly closely to tell these apart. Anyway the report helps a lot in making a decision here from a driving experience viewpoint.

It's hard to tell which one is the copycat. Personally, I'm unimpressed with either. From experience, Ford left me cold with it's substandard build quality/reliability and hype over Sync. Hyundai - meh all around. Perhaps every vehicle has it's quirks, but I'll keep with a Subaru Forester - even if it's got a CVT.

Is it just me or does it always seem that Ford's Ecoboost engines always use more fuel than what the numbers say? Other manufactures with turbos are more inline with rated numbers but why isn't Ford?

Pretty good showing for the Hyundai straight-up against a vehicle more than $7k pricier.

Depends on how it was tested/driven.  But I think Ford has a bit of a tuning issue.   I've noticed this being behind more than one EcoBoost vehicle, but they seem to be tuned more rich than others.

It actually gets worse with mileage. I had a '13 Explorer Sport (with the 3.5 Ecoboost) which averaged about 13 L/100km (~18 mpg) for the first 30000km, but after 40000km it was averaging 18L/100km (~13 mpg). No, I didn't expect it to be good on fuel, but considering I thought I was actually taking it slower and easier I didn't expect that significant a drop. All the maintenance was done in a timely manner, so I would suspect it's actually a sign of premature wear.

There were enough problems (telematics/MFT, suspension/sway bars, burnt fuel smells in the cabin, transmission, headlights, electronic quirks (eg. problems with the sensor when starting the car because it didn't sense the car was in park). Of course, it didn't take long for the warranty to expire along with my patience.

As I start to see more facelifted Escapes (or is that Kuga? Still mentally living in Europe here), I get more disappointed. The exterior design is more generic now and I'm not liking the interior updates.

the Tucson is a more reliable vehicle (according to all the surveys on this) and gives you additional 2 years more warranty to find out if that's the case ;D  Ford will always sell more as they have more dealers.

I wonder how the ride of the Escape could have improved by having standard wheels instead of 19's.
Good on Hyundai for getting the stated fuel economy numbers in real life.
Forester would be the one for me if I go for a CUV with my money.

It's easier to get closer to EPA numbers in a normally aspirated car than a turbo car. It would have been interesting to see the two turbo versions compared.

As far as reliability, it's a wash. CR continues to hammer Ford on MFT/Sync, which isn't a reliability issue, but an ergonomic one.

Ahhhh...whatever. Enjoy what you like, and if these things float your boat, then enjoy the hell out of em. At least they are honest baby-strollers, and not like the fat SUVs trying to be sports cars that is all the craze these days. So yeah...my first positive comment about a CUV ever. Something must be wrong with me.

You rant on this topic isn't getting old.  Neither is Rupert's rant on having too much power, speedometers, etc.

Hey, I wouldn't want on of these rigs, but my wife drives one.  I went for something more practical and I have my very impractical sports car for the summer.

The Escape tested is another example of how not to equip a vehicle from the factory.  I'd skip most of the options on this SE but splurge for the 2.0T and come in below 35K or go straight to the Titanium AWD std with the 2.0T, Sony audio, leather, power seats and liftgate, nice 18'' wheels and be out the door slightly below the SE tested.  Special order is the name of the game with most american vehicles it seems.

oh ouch! the Escape is a great little CUV, but looks like price is quite a bit out of control...also this is not Ford's most popular package, the 2.0T+AWD is the best selling in the Escape line up.

having said that, I bet one could get a big-fat discount on one...which could certainly close the pricing gap by a bit.

Hey Choaoshere, I was noticing your moniker "won't run with the pack" and thinking how much marketers love you guys because you just become another easily identifiable group they can sell to with products aimed at the "outliers".  I recently saw a Lexus RX commercial that perfectly captures this dynamic as they try to convince the viewer that they too can be a "rebel" by buying the best selling luxury SUV in North America, the one favoured by well heeled soccer moms everywhere. Hilarious....
