The Volvo is a looker, but an $80k plus huge luxury SUV powered by a highstrung four-pot does not appeal.  Audi all the way here.  Oh, and 22" ride-ruining rims are just ridiculous.

+1

Watching Escalades and Excursions weave around manhole covers on the streets because they have paper thin rubber on huge rims is hilarious and pathetic. So much for the Utility part of the vehicle...

'Cause you can only drive down Main St. so many times

Wouldn't even bother with either of these with how well the new Denali is done. Especially that Volvo 4 cyl thing, nope.

Volvo all the way. Not so sure about the 4-cyl thing, but I dont care. That thing is just too sexy.

But honestly, the V60 is better in every regard for a family mover with a hatch.

Damn Volvo you make fine looking autos...Im a sucker for Swede design

You mean aside from passenger space, the ability to carry seven people, cargo space, and towing capacity, right?

Someone in my condo building has a blue one with those 22" wheels.  Base 20" would be more than enough for me.

That's what I was thinking.

I love the Volvo, except for the 4 pot.  Audi would be my choice.

for a luxury 7 passenger vehicle, these are both pretty sexy. i'd like to go volvo, but like others... that 4 pot scares me... lots of tech on a small engine moving a heavy beast.... from sweden. not the go to recipe for me.

i'd still pick it though, as i decide with my eyes when everything else is close, and i find the audi to be boring enough that if i needed toys and 7 passengers i'd get a high end van over it and save some coin. the volvo, i would actually choose and forgo cost and comfort (if i was actually willing and able to part with 80+ for a family hauler).

starting to see a few more of the xc90's on the road...

I have recently test drove both to see if they may be something I replace the LR4 with.  I came away thinking I will gladly drive the Land Rover a few more years. The lack of utility on these compared to the old school LR4 is just too big of a compromise for me. Since Land Rover screwed up and replaced the V8 with a blown V6 (to get 1 mpg more  ::)) I will need to shop for a garage queen 2013.

I had a double axle car hauler with a 70 Mach 1 on it the other day (6000lbs ? ) and the LR4 didn't even blink with the load. I can't say I would be comfortable pulling that with the Volvo. Maybe if it was a lease. ;D

I will say both these large wagons (Audi and Volvo) are very nice, they just aren't utilities anymore.

I prefer the lower profile styling of the Q7 over the tall boxy look of the XC70.   Too bad, though that the Audi didn't have the Volvo interior and seating as it's a class act.  I would take the V6 Audi any day over the small  Volvo 4.  So the Audi would be my choice, if I had more money than I  knew what to do with.

That being said there are several decent larger three row CUV/SUV's out there for far less money.

Love the exterior design of the Volvo, but Audi all the way in basically every other category.

22" wheels are ridiculous on these vehicles.   I actually like the look of some meatier sidewalls on a (faux) utility vehicle.

All these CUVs are just jacked up wagons.   You're looking for body-on-frame clearly.  Lexus GX?

GX: I can't get past that ridiculous side-swing tailgate (that opens the wrong way to top it off)  and this is coming from someone who owns a Ridgeline.. ;D Plus the third row seat storage is awful , it eats up way too much rear cargo space. If Lexus it would have to be an older LX470 before they went all puffy. Good luck finding one though as owners never want to give these up.

This used LX is an example of how far we have strayed from our roots. I would be all over this LX except. Quebec...

In the highly anecdotal school run wars at my daughter's school, the XC90 is winning. Lots of previous generation Q7s, but most of those who are looking to replace have the Volvo at or near to the top of the list. I think it's because it is less obnoxious, image-wise. Audis are seen as a bit obvious, and the GLS too ostentatious. The dream vehicle combo for these families seems to be a Model S and an XC90.

For the 2016 year-to-date, they've sold 13,200 XC90s in the US, compared to 2,240 for the 2014 year-to-date (2015 is not a fair comparison, since the new model came out part way through the year). Seems like they are pretty popular.

I will say that until this Volvo, I would not have called any SUV / CUV beautiful.  But it is stunning, inside and out.  No way could get past a tiny 2.0 moving this beast around, though.  This motor in compact wagon with a similarly gorgeous interior - now that would have my full attention.

Have you considered a new Range Rover / Sport with the TD V6? Obviously a lot more $$ than the LR4, but a torquey diesel V6 could be a very worthy replacement for your 5.0. Maybe keep the LR4 a few more years and pick up a CPO TD6 in a year or two?
