Low mileage drivers whatever age do not need an expensive, subsidised EV..who knows when these booddoggle freebies will evaporate..soon I hope..............keep your present presentable vehicle and maintain it into the ground :light: .DOES more for this PLANET we all claim as GIAInormous polluted hole than buying NEW shyte. Too easy for those with money BURNING holes in their O Zone pockets of platitude. :shuffle:
This.  I wouldn't trade in my 2 year old vehicle to get an EV.  That would just be silly and I wouldn't ever make up for the depreciation.  However, if shopping new, after driving a car into the ground for 10-15 years, I would strongly consider looking at one.

No incentives here in AB.

that is exactly my situation. The Saab is getting long in the tooth, and is still on its original turbo and transmission at 200+K. Need to shop new anyways, so might as well get an EV that fits my budget and needs. No more gas stops, no more oil changes / coolant changes / spark plugs with every oil change etc.etc. Saab isn't bad on gas given the power she has, but she drinks only 15yr single malt gas - can be expensive to fill.

I agree, no sense in trading in a new-ish car for an EV, you will just bleed money. But if you need to get a new car anyway, why not?
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Nor  can we expect any from Miss Rachel, or any politician of whatever stripe, at least as long as there is dino stuff below.

A Hyundai salesperson I talked to recently as much as refused to try to let me buy a hybrid/EV, saying, quite rightly, that the extra cost wasn't worth it. I guess he realised that at my advanced age, my odo wouldn't wind around excessively, certainly not enough to justify the outlay. I kept my wallet in my pocket (although somewhat tempted by the regular Sonata or its Kia cousin).

I covered the monetary aspect here:

If you're not in incentived ON, QC or BC, you'll never make up the cost difference. Even more so with AB gas prices! YMMV however, depending on the myriad of scenarios that are out there. Hybrid is a no-cost option on a Lincoln MKZ. In lower segments, we get the opposite: a basic Leaf S will cost $12k more than a similar-sized Versa Note S with CVT, and that's after the $8k post-taxes QC rebate!

For those living in Ontario, however, the rebates are fantastic right now, even on non plug-in hybrids.

The argument to not spend the extra money on the PHEV misses one important point.
The price difference pays for an electric drive train which is quiet, powerful and fun to drive in the city.

I challenge anyone here to test drive a Chevy Volt when the battery has been charged full overnight and scoot it around in the city.  It's a hoot when running fully on electricity.

People spend money on leather seats, sunroofs, audio/electronic systems in their cars, all of these extra's are compelling for their owners.

My take : The quiet, low noise, low vibration electric drive system is a luxury + performance + efficiency option that is worth the money.

I dunno, maybe thats the case in AB before various charges and taxes. Mathematically speaking, 65 cents to drive 40+ km based on 10kwh battery  :D

Seriously!!65 cent to drive 40K?   that's what my rate shows... $5.58

I just googled ontario rates..... 14 to &18.00 at peaks....WTF

If so this could be a good car for my wife on the 40km commute.  she can also plug in at work..!

How reliable are the Sonatas and the hybrid system?

Those numbers are cents, in all likeliness. However, divide the total of kWh consumed in a month by the $$ amount in the end of the bill and your kWh will most likely be around 20 cents if not more. Still, if you charge a plug-in hybrid or an EV overnight, they cost a LOT less to operate than a gas equivalent.

If you want reliable and super energy efficient then get a Prius Prime.

Saw this deal.! 33K Sonata hybrid loaded, ventiladed front seats  :rofl2:

could only find a accord hybrid touring aroung 38K
that vehicle new is $37,500...however, there is a $3750 price adjustment right now, bringing the price down to $33,750 so the car in the kijiji ad is really only discounted $662.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.
