No mention of the massive oily elephant in the room?

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

Seriously, what were the VW accountants thinking? I remember when I was in the lobby of VW HQ at the time, where there are a few models on display. They dared to place a Jetta next to a Mk6 Golf and VW Touareg......as if no one would notice the difference in materials quality  ::)

Well the Jetta is cheaper. Material quality on the newer ones is decent though.

Proceed with caution relative to safety issues.  Not sure if the driver side airbag warning/recall applies to Jettas, but I received a warning for my '14 Passat that it could, upon deployment, cause serious injury or even death from metal shrapnel, no parts available as of last week, for a fix.  I'm driving very cautiously these days.

Just wear a full frontal shield and you should be fine.  [emoji12]

our sportwagon 2011 TDi highline.  Has been super reliable.  With about 170,000Km on it.  The only thing needing attention right now is one of the back door lock is a bit "touchy" and it's been like that for 2 year, I'm just too lazy to check it out.  stuff needing fix under warranty was the blind covering the moonroof to be adjusted. I think that's it.  The DSG tranny is annoying in city traffic though.  I would consider my 2004 sienna tranny smoother.

^^ Your Jetta wagon is a different beast than the Jetta in the article. They were basically the same up until 2010, but that changed with the 2011 models. Regardless of what it says on the rear hatch, your Jetta is really a Golf. ;)

If he bought it in Canada it says Golf on the hatch.

and most people didn't care...the Jetta outsells the Golf 2 to 1 and I bet the new generation will build upon that number.

Disagree. Worldwide in 2015 VW sold 1.041.279 units of the Golf, second only to the Toyota Corolla as the world's best selling vehicle. Even the Polo ranks in the top 10.

Even within Canada, the statistics show otherwise: Golf is the best seller.

2015 US     Canada

Golf  65,308     20,515
GTI 23,669     2625
Jetta 131,109     27,719
Passat 78,207     5838

The Jetta is easily the best selling VW in the US and Canada.

Pretty low sales numbers when you think about it.  It is good in other markets, but really sucks here.

So avoid the GLI and you might be OK. I still don't trust the VW. I think the safest bet is to find a Manual/Stick too. I like the bland styling.
