Since my Yaris HB is now in its 11th year I've been looking at a replacement. Not unexpectedly it has shown its worth in the long haul with very low running costs and has been extremely well suited to my needs -a runabout that can swallow a surprising amount of cargo with no need for long highway drives. However a major upgrade to the current model is likely 18 months or so in the future and I don't relish the current offering . So I dropped into the local Ford dealer and had a look at a Fiesta (no test drive) that was very much like the one in this test. From the static side I have to  agree with the review, a very nice interior , well equipped , good seating position and an actual colour on the outside. I say an actual colour as one of my pet peeves is that most manufacturers go bland, very bland or extremely bland with one colour on the inside (black) and black, white, silver and gray on the outside and little else . Yes I overstate (although not by much) but you get the point . It seems they have bought into Henry F's dictum of "any colour as long as its black"- kudos to Ford for offering something different. So is the Fiesta an option - not really. Despite the long haul example from Car & Driver, Consumer Reports gives the Fiesta a black eye and since long haul reliability is critical (I tend to buy new , maintain and keep for many years) then it s falls off the list. Also the salesperson seemed less than enthused. When I asked what the Titanium version offered over the Se on display , the response was a a rather vague comment that one got different wheels and seating material.  I thought the salespeople for NA manufacturers had changed since the days of the Vega and Pinto but seems I was mistaken.

That's a sharp-looking little hatch.  Back seat looks rather cramped though - both in terms of legroom and headroom.

Oh, and thumb-shifters are stooopid.

Not as bad as I thought it would be. Seating is more "vertical" than in the Focus, so I could seat "behind myself". The 5th passenger capacity is optimistic though!

My favourite supermini/subcompact on the North American market. I'd do the 3-pedal with the 3-cyl please.  :)

Only problem is that it's priced a bit close to the Focus 1.0 if you factor in incentives, and the latter has notably better interior build quality and materials.

Fun review to read Daniel!

I've got a soft spot for the Fiesta, and I'm not sure why because the looks really don't appeal to me that much.  The subcompact class had a bit of a renaissance a few years ago when fuel prices peaked - I hope the MNFRs don't forget about them now that gas is cheap again!

I had the Focus 1.0 the week prior to the Fiesta, and I must say I enjoyed the Fiesta's drivetrain a LOT more. The Focus EB netted me 8.9 l/100km over a week of commuting, so I don't think it's worth the extra coin, espacially with two pedals.

For me and the Fiesta it's ST or bust.

I agree, the 1.0 is likely better fitted to the Fiesta, but I'm a stickler on interiors. I have much experience with the C1 platform and like it a lot. Plus, I don't think the Fiesta comes with the automatic start-stop, which is something I generally prefer versus shutting cars down/starting manually all the time. And the Focus has 6-speeds and more volumeous cargo area for my biking gear.

My favourite too. I gave serious thought to getting one, either a bargain basement with the 5 speed or an ST. The thought of a middle-ager showing up to a date in a Smartie coloured Fiesta might not be the best first impression eventually nixed. it.  :-\

And very well written article too.

Either you're targeting the wrong women or you just plain don't want a Fiesta.

Thanks Sir O'! I have to admit my Mr. Spock side may think of me as being bit too old to drive this Hot Wheels on a regular basis, but it made me feel young and I had some fun!!  :bounce: James T Kirk side wins again!

I would either get mine in Magnetic, which is a titanium grey, or that beautiful Kona blue, neither are smartie-esque, in my opinion anyways. That orange doesn't really do a lot for me
