so damn sexy...love Swede design:speedy, safe, practical, minimalist in a Bauhaus sort of way...and subtly badass

V90 for me thanks

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

S90's rear end isn't working for me.  OTOH, V90's rear looks great!
Oh yeah, the V90 wins on practicality, too.

"First was the new XC90 – a gorgeous full-sized luxury SUV that’s become the most-awarded utility vehicle of the year."

Most-awarded?  Awarded to whom?  Could I get one?

Apparently, "awarded" has come to mean "award winning" in advertising parlance.  This is rather unfortunate.  "Awarded" means to grant an award.

Beyond that point, this looks like a fantastic vehicle.  The wagon looks particularly good.  There are some amazing choices in that category.

Mid 50's for starting price?  That would be exactly what I predicted a few months ago and moves the S90 a good 10% above the current S80.  Still super well priced versus the E-Class and 5-series though.

Also saw on couple reviews on the XC90 that the engine is hard on gas.....20l  ish.
you can't really go by reviews though...the vehicle is usually only hard on gas relative to how it is driven...since many cars nowadays are forced air (turbo, etc) they generate plenty of twist down low...this often causes the testers to enjoy the boost, which of course uses more fuel...when driven "normally", they are fine.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

After reading the other thread today ( XC90 vs Q7) I went off to Volvo.ca site to look at the V90.     Most annoyed. The build and price is not there yet for the V90.    Don't care about the price as 2016 is not a car buying year but I did want to build one to see what goodies it had.     I guess I'll look again in a few months.

Hardly surprising - the boost has to be  pretty much constant to move all that pork with only 2 liters of displacement.

The Cdn Volvo site is notorious for being behind, outdated, errors, etc. Hope you don't mind long waits.

Agree, not only is the V90 gorgeous and practical, it's that the S90 styling aft of the A-pillar is dull at best, and that rear is just homely, IMHO.

This is what i don't understand: if the boost and subsequent torque in these new engines arrives as low as it does, i.e. 1500 RPM or thereabaouts, then one is *always* in the boost, whether driving aggressively or normally, right? How woul one avoid tapping into the boost when it arrives so early?

The boost only arrives early if you summon it. :) Keep your foot out of the throttle and the engine doesn't move enough air to create boost.

Ahh ok - makes sense. Though it seems with the power coming on so quickly in these newer DI, low pressure turbos, it would seem to take considerably restraint to avoid hitting boost. But i guess the idea is once you do reach your desired speed, you can ease up, upshift, and dip below the boost level, right? I realize this is all probably elementary stuff, but driving my older subaru with a higher-pressure turbo, alongside  some other direct-injection, low-pressure turbo's, i notice the driving styles are different and the boost is of course so much more immediate.
