100A service is pretty standard for houses heated by gas or oil.

That breaker is a two pole 100A. A 200A breaker would have 200A written across the bar.
Where have you been ? You are finally use all those years of schooling and experience to use here  :rofl2:

Writing a statement of work for a 1200A, 138kV breaker installation.  ;D
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

OH! 427 SOHC! Nice engine!

A shop putting those together could get by with a smaller electrical entrance. ;D

Our little 1200 sqft bungalow has 200 amp service. Same panel as Railton's pic but we have 5 spare slots.  All these dedicated breakers for fridges and other stuff that has water and electricity kills you.  I have two dedicated circuits , one for the computers and one for the TV and stereo stuff as well.  We have a gas stove with a dedicated 120v circuit that also powers the exhaust fan...we left the 240V in place of course.
When we moved here the house had a small panel and a pup panel. IIRC it was about $2000 to redo into a proper panel.

As for the AC. How big a unit in tonnes for that size house from which the AC load should be available.

^ you mean with 100A?

Yea, that's all I have IIRC.  Everything in my house is gas.  I'll check for you though.

Running a Deep Water Culture (DWC) hydroponic set-up doesn't use my energy either.  Obviously the light took up the most at 430 watts.

You know what I have that DOES take up tons of energy?  My sauna heater.  10,000 watts!!   :o
That is only 45 amps at full wattage @ 220 v

Looking at my panel now it appears we have 400 Amp service, or rather 2x200 amp breakers. Though it's a larger house (5000ish sq ft) heated by electric heat pump, electric in-floor heat, electric stove, Garage 240v, and power for multiple washers/dryers.

I'd probably want 200 Amp service. What if you get several electric cars?  ;D

Here`s a panel load calculator that you might find handy:

http://ask-the-electrician.com/residential-electrical-load-calculation.html

There are a bunch of them online.

That's fine.....I was talking about energy usage.  We get charged in KwH.  This thing is 10Kw.  I wonder if the meter spins like a propeller when I have the heater on.   :rofl2:

Was that about the picture I posted?

Was wondering how that worked, but maybe I got it figured out now: 200A main panel that feeds a 100A sub-panel in the house and a 40A sub-panel for the garage?

It's funny, because the house panel is just about maxed out, but I've got this crazy-empty thing in the garage.  :rofl2:

Based on how picky mmret is.   I would not by a new construction from a track builder.

So many issues will occur and you will off yourself.

But a pre existing home for less and keep some buffer to upgrade whatever you don't like about it.

Everyone I know that every bought a new home is always getting :censor: fixed or trying to sue the builder.

Also the small things on a new home add up fast,  then you realize a resale would have been cheaper in the first place

Yeah, you've got a 200A entrance. The 100A two pole breaker feeds another panel or load.

The higher the current rating of the panel bus, the more circuits can be hung off of it. But if you only have a couple of heavy loads, you still need the higher rating, so you end up with a nearly empty panel even though the panel bus is fairly well loaded up.

Your friends are cheap and buy from shitty builders. You get what you pay for when you shop for lowest $$$ per square foot. There were shitty builders in the past and there are shitty builders now. You get what you pay for.

My dad is not cheap.  And built with one of the best, award winning builders in the area.  And he had some issues.  Nothing your head would explode over.  And they were fixed of course.  But still had some issues.
