He will!!  The more kms he logs, the better he likes the car.

I'm hoping this means he keeps itjust long enough until I'm ready to buy it.  ;D

I dunno...that GS out Jon's way looks pretty tempting!!
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

It is settled then, Ron is going to drive to Oakville so that I can personally experience the enhanced sound deadening of his LS430.  Thanks in advance.

I still don't have the car back from getting a new bumper and fog lights!!

Don't get me wrong: the LS460 I drove acquitted itself as a very good vehicle.  I could readily enjoy owning this vehicle.  And at its depreciated price, you probably cannot go too wrong.

Were my expectations too high?  Possibly, but I aligned those expectations with a near $100k new MRSP.

At some level, the goodness of these vehicles requires an appreciation of nuance.  You need more than a short test drive to discover the totality of engineering that goes into a vehicle like this.  Even something as simple as the texture of the steering wheel is unusually well executed.

My two cents.

In the current era of high horsepower, a vehicle like this should have something approaching 500 hp.  It is not under-powered.  But I want to be able to say more than that about a vehicle in this segment.

The LS460 needs more sound deadening.  Jaeger is right: Tire and engine noise are well insulated.  But that's not enough for a flagship Lexus.  And the various threads in Lexus forums criticizing the LS460 for not living up to the LS430's sound deadening standards bear out this point.

Good points and spot on about finding the engineering nuances.  Even still...at times...I find something new and go "Oh, cool!".  I remember the first time I saw the vents smoothly sweeping back and forth to keep the cabin cool.  Or when only one of them is doing it because there's no passenger.  Or the "winter mode" for the wipers in my GS. Or places in the interior that don't need leather...but leather is there anyways with beautiful stitching. How there's hidden drawers at the front of the seats. Or how it took me a few times to notice how the Antique Walnut finish in the LS is black around the edge to blend into the black leather.  Or when you push the button to spray/clean your windshield..the wipers wait a few seconds to do their last wipe to ensure it gets any lingering drips or streaks on the windshield.  Steering wheel?  AP...the steering wheel in some LS take 38 days to build!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mabO5t5alK0

I don't think these things are unique to Lexus.  But to higher end luxury cars.  As you say..it's the details that make the difference between just luxury and ultra luxury.

The car looks more used based on pics than the mileage would suggest and whether the sale is "private" is a good question. But since it's rare:

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

I know you fluff off the "reliability" bit like it's no biggie...but these are used cars and that reliability bit could save you thousands and thousands over your ownership.  So it's pretty important unless you've got money to burn or a good 3rd party warranty.

Take the 7 Series.  That has always been among BMWs least reliable car, and it's almost legendary for how much they cost to keep on the road.  You'd be a very brave man indeed to own that 7 Series out of warranty!  Great engine though!  And the Volvo isn't a V8 and doesn't have anywhere near the options of the Lexus (or the BMW).  And it doesn't feel as luxurious as the Lexus or the BMW. AWD is a nice bonus though.

I understand where you're coming from of course.  But it's rare to find cars with all of the things you'd want in a luxurious GT car...especially when factoring in price, reliability, quality, etc.  And the GS430 has been chosen as the best used buy in its class by JD Power and Consumer Reports too (IIRC).

While we're on the topic...what would you buy for $12K?

What about the latest gen Acura RLX

http://m.autotrader.ca/a/5_25285723?ursrc=mb&upsp=5&upsc=10&prx=-1&orup=5_10_43

Pretty stately, understated and luxurious. Tons of room, and you won't look like a wannabe baller driving a super used >$100k car.
I love it when a plan comes together.

Seriosuly...look at the steals here!!

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/city-of-halifax/lexus-gs430/1139750608?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Oh, I know!  Just no need at all for such a car right now.  But, if I did, OMG, I'd have a GS430 in a nanosecond.

I had a lot angst between GS430 and LS430.  GS430 of that vintage essentially rides on the LS platform.  But it has all the newer tech and the first real "L-Finesse" treatment on a Lexus.  And...the GS430 in Canada only came fully loaded to the gills.  15 speaker Levinson, adjustable shocks, sport package, etc.  And it does handle great...so maybe more to APs tastes  http://www.autos.ca/car-test-drives/test-drive-2006-lexus-gs-430/

I think mmret test drove a GS460, too...I might be wrong.  And holy crap....it does 0-50 in 5.5 seconds!

So sell me your LS and use the funds to go buy that GS out west since you are the adventurous type!  Drive it into Oakville and dinner is on me at your restaurant of choice.   ;D
